The Minnesota Vikings have begun their process of cutting their roster down to 53 players as of Sunday.

The team began the day by trading QB Sam Howell and a 2026 sixth-round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a 2026 fifth-rounder and 2027 seventh-rounder. They also signed QB Carson Wentz and released QB Brett Rypien.

Now, the Vikings have made another wave of cuts to begin trimming their roster down.

The Vikings made the announcement via their team website. In addition to releasing Rypien, the Vikings have also released OLB Cam Gill.

Gill was signed by the team about two weeks ago to add some depth to their outside linebacker room for the end of preseason. He previously spent time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Carolina Panthers, and Detroit Lions.

Over his first five NFL seasons, Gill appeared in 50 games, totaling 51 tackles, a tackle for loss, and 2.5 sacks.

The Vikings also announced they have waived the following list of nine players:

  • S Mishael Powell
  • T Logan Brown
  • OL Zach Bailey
  • WR Silas Bolden
  • WR Robert Lewis
  • DL Travis Bell

Many of these releases aren’t entire surprises, but the release of Bolden sends a bit of clarity for the Vikings’ current punt returner situation.

Bolden was considered in the mix to be Minnesota’s punt returner this season after a decent collegiate career as a return man for both Oregon State and Texas. He finished his five-year college career with 33 punt returns for 412 yards (12.5 yard per return) and a pair of punt return touchdowns.

However, Bolden did not get an opportunity to return a punt in Minnesota’s preseason finale, with those duties belonging to Myles Price. Lucky Jackson has also been listed as the starting punt returner on the depth chart.
