Vikings Trade One QB Away, Sign Another

The Minnesota Vikings have officially shaken up their quarterback room on Sunday morning.

The team has decided to send QB Sam Howell to the Philadelphia Eagles after the team’s final preseason game on Friday in which Howell did not take a single snap. It comes after a disappointing training camp period from the 2022 third-round pick, and the Vikings have decided they need to look elsewhere at QB2.

Immediately afterward, the Vikings also announced that they had signed veteran QB Carson Wentz as Howell’s replacement on the roster.

The terms of the Howell trade were tweeted by Adam Schefter.

“Trade: Vikings are sending QB Sam Howell to the Philadelphia Eagles, per ESPN sources. Howell now will join Jalen Hurts and Tanner McKee in the Eagles QB room,” Schefter wrote. “Trade terms: Minnesota receives 5th in 2026 and a 7th in 2027 Philly gets QB Sam Howell and a 6th in 2026.”

The trade itself isn’t all that surprising. There have been plenty of hints that Howell could be on the way out after his disappointing training camp.

With Philadelphia’s backup QB Tanner McKee injuring his finger earlier this week, the Eagles were in a position where they needed another quarterback on the roster behind Jalen Hurts. As a result, the Vikings were able to gain additional draft capital while sending Howell out.

As for the Wentz signing, the Vikings worked the veteran QB out on Saturday afternoon, Wentz, a former No. 2 overall pick in 2016 by the Eagles, spent the 2024 campaign with the Kansas City Chiefs, sitting behind Patrick Mahomes.

The team itself tweeted the signing, writing, “The #Vikings have agreed to terms with QB Carson Wentz.”

Wentz appeared in three games last season, making one start in Week 18. In total, he completed 12 of his 19 passes for 118 yards.

The former MVP candidate has served largely as a backup for the past few years now, starting just nine games since the start of the 2022 season. His last full-time starting job came with the Indianapolis Colts in 2021 when he started all 17 games and completed 62.4% of his passes for 3563 yards, 27 touchdowns, and seven interceptions.

Some Vikings fans may have preferred to give Max Brosmer the QB2 job after an impressive training camp, but this signing gives Minnesota at least a little bit of security in the quarterback room.

Brosmer, while he played well, has never taken snaps at the NFL level and was signed as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Minnesota. He needs a bit of development before the Vikings can trust him behind J.J. McCarthy.
