The Minnesota Vikings May Be Hunting for a New QB

The Minnesota Vikings, as suspected by many, may finally be on the hunt for a new quarterback.
This spring, the Vikings lost Sam Darnold and Nick Mullens, forcing them to find new quarterbacks behind 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy. In the end, the Vikings brought in Sam Howell, Brett Rypien, and UDFA Max Brosmer for training camp, but the question of who will be the QB2 in Minnesota for the 2025 season has remained.
Now, according to the most recent reports, the Vikings could be searching for a new veteran to take on that QB2 role in the form of a former No. 2 overall pick.
Minnesota Vikings Reportedly Work Out Carson Wentz

The Vikings have given a workout to the second overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft Carson Wentz on Saturday.
The report comes from Lindsey Thiry of ESPN, who tweeted, “QB Carson Wentz is working out for the Vikings today, per source.”
The workout makes sense given Howell’s struggles throughout camp and preseason. The 2022 third-round pick had a solid preseason opener, completing 11 of his 13 passes for 105 yards against the Houston Texans, but it was a disaster in Week 2 against New England.
He completed just one of his five pass attempts for 13 yards and an ugly interception on Minnesota’s side of the field.

Meanwhile, Brosmer has impressed in all three preseason showings, but as an undrafted free agents, the Vikings likely want a veteran presence as QB2 behind J.J. McCarthy as he makes his first starts of his NFL career in 2025.
Wentz, selected No. 2 overall by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2016, spent the 2025 season in Kansas City sitting behind Patrick Mahomes.
He was once viewed as one of the more talented quarterbacks in the league, but following a season-ending injury in 2017, Wentz has taken significant hits in production over the years, which now has him fighting for backup roles on NFL rosters.

Even still, Wentz has seen a lot at the NFL level. He has started 94 games over the course of his nine-year career and certainly could fill the void of a veteran presence behind McCarthy.
Kevin O’Connell has also loved finding ways to rejuvenate quarterbacks’ careers during his tenure in Minnesota, and perhaps Wentz could be his latest project.
It’s also worth noting that Josh McCown, Minnesota’s current QBs coach, was Wentz’s backup with the Eagles during 2019.
