Vikings Get Rid of Another QB

Sunday morning was busy for Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and the Minnesota Vikings.
The team decided to trade away Sam Howell to the Philadelphia Eagles along with a 2026 sixth-round pikc in exchange for a 2026 fifth rounder and a 2027 seventh rounder. Moments later, Minnesota also made the decision to sign veteran QB Carson Wentz, seemingly indicating that he will begin the season as the QB2 on the roster.
That evidently would not be the end of Minnesota’s QB moves for the day though as the team has decided to part ways with yet another quarterback just hours later.
Vikings Part Ways with QB Brett Rypien

The news was reported by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, who posted on X, “The #Vikings are releasing QB Brett Rypien, per source. The respected veteran should have interest elsewhere, while Minnesota moves forward with a remodeled QB room of J.J. McCarthy, Carson Wentz and undrafted rookie Max Brosmer.”
Rypien, a Boise State product, has been in the organization since last August following J.J. McCarthy’s season-ending meniscus tear.
The veteran appeared in all three preseason games for Minnesota this month, giving a mixed bag of performances. He completed 15 of his 29 passes for 151 yards and an interception.

Ultimately, the move to release Rypien solidifies the idea that Max Brosmer flat out outplayed the six-year pro, and the Vikings will make the undrafted rookie their QB3 this season behind McCarthy and Wentz.
It’s a well-deserved promotion for Brosmer, a University of Minnesota product, who showed outstanding poise and impressive pocket awareness over his three preseason games. Brosmer also played in each of Minnesota’s preseason game, and he actually got the start over Rypien in Week 3 against the Titans this Friday.
In total, Brosmer completed 60.3% of his passes for 364 yards, a pair of touchdowns, and a single interception.

Rypien now enters free agency, and according to Pelissero, he should receive some interest back out on the open market.
In the worst-case where he doesn’t sign with a new 53-man roster, though, Minnesota could potentially bring Rypien back on their practice squad.
