Subterfuge and Tomfoolery
‘Tis the season for misleading information. In fact, now is the time in the offseason when teams often like to cloak their true intentions. The Minnesota Vikings, in many ways, are no different.
We can (and should) glean information from the credible sources when it’s available. Recently, the team spent some time bringing in players who will be picked in the mid-to-late rounds of the draft. There’s very little chance the team is wasting one of its limited amount of visit slots for guys they’re not actually interested in drafting.
Even in the players they did target, though, we can see the gamesmanship from Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. Rather than tip his hand for the opening round, KAM did his due diligence on players who’ll be available later on. The purple GM, quite evidently, wants to keep his cards close to his chest for Round #1. He’s wise to do so.
On the other end of things is a team like the Detroit Lions. GM Brad Holmes confirmed that there has been interest in their pick and that they’re interested on dropping down, should the right offer arrive: “I think definitely we could pull a trade off if the other team is willing before the draft.” For a team in their position – a true rebuild where there is a massive talent deficiency – it makes sense to try to create a bidding war. Ideally, the Lions will get multiple teams vying for the #2 spot.
Otherwise, most teams will likely try to throw the rest of the league off their trails. Feigned interest will be shown; rumors will be leaked. Much of it will be mere hogwash.
Discerning fans, then, ought to keep their wits about them. We’re going to be hearing a lot of noise in the coming weeks, and only a fraction of it will be true.
