Shurmur Reportedly Added to Vikings Staff

The Minnesota Vikings have reportedly decided to add Pat Shurmur to their coaching staff, making him the second coaching addition to the team this offseason as Tony Sparano was the first. Shurmur was most recently the offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2015 and is also a former head coach of the Cleveland Browns.

The details of Shurmur’s official coaching title have not yet been released to the public but it will definitely be on the offensive side of the ball. For an offense that ranked 29th in the NFL in total yards per game, it does not come as a shock that the Vikings would bring in someone new to try and improve the unit.

VT’s own Austin Belilse has also received confirmation that the Shurmur hiring will not cause any other changes to the team’s coaching staff. Minnesota still has an opening to fill for their running backs coach position as it is assumed that Shurmur will not be assigned that role since he has never held that title for a team during his career as a coach in the NFL.

    • Honestly, it really depends on what he will be doing as to whether or not he will cause any improvement. He could be a consultant working with Turner on offense gameplan. The two would have to play nice together before that would be an improvement. Just sayin...

  • Shurmur loves Sam Bradford. Could this mean the Vikings might make a run at the soon to be free agent?

  • I'm not suggesting Teddy's starting job is in trouble, but having a veteran backup might be a good idea. I was holding my breath every time Teddy got hit.

  • Why do people think Shaun Hill is an inadequate back up? Thought he looked pretty good coming out of camp and preseason.

      • While I certainly don't think it impossible that he could be the designated starter at the beginning of the season, I am curious as to why you say that he WILL be a starter as if a statement of fact. He has had many chances to be a starter and has not done a whole lot to secure that role in the future. He could very well be accepting a role as a back up for the remainder of his career. I don't know if he would carry enough cred to be brought on board to be a mentor for a young qb.

  • Norv being demoted sure wouldn't break my heart any. This is not a good sign for him and changes are definitely needed.

    • I could not agree more Johnny. Was it just me or do others find it strange that in many games where the vikes had difficulty in moving the chains they were able to put together a two minute drive at the end? Where was the ability to move the ball with some authority in the first 58 minutes? Just my opinion.
