Kyler Murray Trade? That Idea Is Out There.

Kyler Murray arrived in Minnesota a week and a half ago, on board to presumably fill the QB1 job in 2026 and perhaps longer. But according to NFL Network‘s Tom Pelissero, a Murray trade sometime this year cannot be ruled out.
The rumor exists, though the Vikings have already built a workable QB path.
Although extremely unlikely, it didn’t take long to start the faux rumors.
The Murray Speculation Doesn’t Add Up for Minnesota
The Vikings have many cooks in the kitchen at quarterback.

Pelissero: Would Vikings Trade Murray if J.J. McCarthy Wins QB1 Job?
Carson Wentz’s one-year extension with the Vikings confused many last week. Some don’t understand how Minnesota can possibly have a deep quarterback room.
Pelissero spoke to KFAN’s Power Trip Morning last week and said, “There’s a lot of ways this can go. I don’t see this going the way of Carson Wentz is the Week 1 starter. It’s much more likely that this is, alright, if Kyler beats out J.J., J.J’s probably the 2, Carson’s the 3. If it’s not a fit for Kyler in the system and J.J. beats him out, J.J. starts. Now you’re figuring out, alright, is Kyler the 2? Are you trading Kyler?”
“Are you elevating Wentz? It is going to be a competition. Kyler hasn’t played in this offense before. It may be a hit. It may work out great. It may work out not so great. We don’t know that. And because he’s on a minimum deal, you’re not really taking a financial risk by bringing him in.”
Vikings fans have pondered Murray’s schematic fits for months, with some insisting he doesn’t fit O’Connell’s offense.
Pelissero added, “It might just go, you know what, this doesn’t really fit. Kyler is really good in terms of creating things off schedule. He’s never played in a precision type of offense like you have with Kevin O’Connell. He grew up in the Air Raid. He played under Kliff Kingsbury.”
“Let’s see, it could go really well for Kyler, it could go not so well. J.J. could come and be the same guy, or J.J. could be vastly improved.”
A Bizarre Theory This Early
Murray signed with the Vikings 12 days ago, folks. Twelve days. Now is not the time to envision trade theories, and it’s actually surprising that Murray’s representation didn’t demand a no-trade clause inside a deal that was so damn team-friendly in the first place.
Trading Murray is something to consider down the line, if applicable, for example, if McCarthy looks so remarkable in training camp that Murray demands out because he’s discontented with a QB2 job. The only Murray trade that should come about is from his own request.
On top of that, McCarthy has been utterly injury-prone through two seasons, playing just 30% of games since the start of 2024. Until he strings together multiple seasons of pristine health, a quality backup should always be in the Vikings’ orbit, and this time, for $1.3 million, why not Murray?
Wentz Can Reasonably Be the QB3 without Trades
When Wentz signed with the Vikings last week, some manufactured a controversy, suggesting McCarthy could be traded, as Wentz apparently brought too much mojo to Minnesota’s quarterback room.

But that theory didn’t make any sense either, as Wentz wasn’t a heavy-hitting Pro Bowl quarterback last year. His performance traveled a middle lane of efficiency, and in fact, his short-term legacy among Vikings fans is propped up by gutsy, gritty ways, playing through a torn labrum for a couple of games. Folks forget that Wentz’s production was merely average, which felt like a breath of fresh air with McCarthy’s early-season struggles.
A QB3 like Case Keenum has earned approximately $3 million per season as of late with the Houston Texans and Chicago Bears. Earning $3 million — like Wentz — as a QB3 is not supernatural. It happens.
Free Agency Next Year
Murray’s next chapter — after strutting his stuff in 2026 with the Vikings — will be free agency. The man who averages about 4,000 passing yards, 30 total touchdowns, and 600 rushing yards every 17 starts has a chance to put his thumbprint on the Vikings and maybe even win a playoff game or two — or four. 👀

If so, he won’t be traded. He’ll test the free-agency waters, deciding to stay on as the Vikings franchise quarterback or another team’s savior, not unlike Sam Darnold to the Seattle Seahawks in the 2025 offseason.
Trading Murray should not be a March 2026 talker. He’s significantly more likely to cook in Minnesota, making the idea of a trade unfathomable — no matter what McCarthy does this summer.
