Danielle Hunter Had a Fantastic Week

Between 2015 and 2023, edge rusher Danielle Hunter was tormenting opposing quarterbacks while wearing his Vikings uniform. Since 2024, he’s played for the Houston Texans and remains one of the most disruptive players in the NFL.
On Thursday, the Houston Texans rewarded him with a massive contract extension that will be tacked onto the pre-existing deal, which would’ve expired next offseason. He’s now signed through the 2027 campaign.
ESPN’s DJ Bien-Aime wrote Thursday night, “The first of many offseason paydays for the Houston Texans defense came Thursday with a one-year, $40 million contract extension for defensive end Danielle Hunter, a source confirmed to ESPN. This is Hunter’s second extension with Houston after signing a two-year, $49 million deal as a free agent in March 2024 following an eight-year stint with the Minnesota Vikings.”

Hunter initially left the Vikings for his hometown Texans in 2024, signing a two-year, $49 million contract. At that time, that was still solid money, but perhaps a million or two short, given the impact he has on a defense.
The Vikings, meanwhile, acquired Andrew Van Ginkel and Jonathan Greenard, going cheaper and (slightly) younger at the position. In hindsight, even with both Vikings having a slower 2025 season, it’s hard to point to a loser in the transaction, especially with Hunter’s enormous raises in back-to-back offseasons.
Bien-Aime continued, “After he finished with 12 sacks and Pro Bowl honors in 2024, the Texans rewarded him with a one-year, $35.6 million extension to the back end of that original deal. They also gave him a $12 million raise in 2025, bumping his salary to $32 million.”
Hunter was excellent in 2024 and even better in 2025.
“Hunter’s second year with Houston,” Bien-Aime explained, “surpassed his debut season as he finished with 15 sacks (third in the NFL) and 15 tackles for loss (eighth). His production earned him second-team All-Pro honors as the Texans’ defense ranked No. 2 in scoring (17.4 points per game) and total defense (279.1 yards per game).”

In addition to those 15 sacks in the regular season, he added another 3 in the playoffs. Hunter and 2023 3rd overall pick Will Anderson form one of the elite pass-rushing duos in the NFL, and they probably are at the top of the list.
Hunter entered the league as a freak athlete with low sack totals coming out of LSU. Then-Vikings GM Rick Spielman took the bet on his upside in 2015 and drafted the end with Jamaican roots in the 3rd round. He quickly showed the desired promise and carved out a rotational pass-rushing role early in his career, securing 6 sacks as a rookie.
In Year 2, Hunter raised that number to 12.5 without even starting a single game. Brian Robison and Everson Griffen occupied the starting lineup, but Hunter played a significant role. After only logging 7 sacks in 2017, he posted back-to-back campaigns with 14.5 sacks in 2018 and 2019.
The following two seasons were injury-plagued, with a scary neck injury in 2020 costing him the entire season and a torn pec all but seven games in 2021.

While many feared his career was close to an end, Hunter exploded back to the scene with 10.5 sacks in 2022 and 16.5 under Brian Flores in 2023. In two seasons with the Texans, Hunter tallied 27 sacks in the regular season.
Hunter is now just one more elite season away from igniting serious Hall of Fame conversations. At 31, he continues to play like one of the league’s most dominant edge rushers — and the Texans are paying him accordingly.
