Last-Minute Rumors for Vikings Free Agency

Free agency in the NFL begins on Monday, with “legal tampering.” Stay close to your phone because the NFL will fundamentally change in a single day.

Last-Minute Rumors for Vikings Free Agency

The Minnesota Vikings have about $61 million to spend on the process, and most expect the team to improve the depth chart markedly. The club has already extended Aaron Jones (RB), Theo Jackson (S), and Ryan Wright (P).

And right before legal tampering kicks off, these are some last-minute rumors, sources tell VikingsTerritory.

Daniel Jones = Vikings or Colts

The Cleveland Browns had nibbled around Daniel Jones’ free agency, but realistically, his 2025 place of employment is between the Vikings and Colts.

In Minnesota, Jones can probably play his way into a “summer competition” with J.J. McCarthy, who is the odds-on favorite to start for the Vikings in 2025. Plus, he already knows the organization somewhat well.

Jones would have a legitimate chance to start with the Indianapolis Colts, as Anthony Richardson has floundered through two seasons and struggled to stay healthy. Everyone knew Richardson was raw exiting the 2023 NFL Draft, and he might take even more time to mature into the Colts’ QB1.

It’s reportedly down to the Vikings and Colts for Jones.

Harrison Smith Likely Back for Year No. 14

Theory on Harrison
Jeffrey Becker-USA TODAY Sports

Because Brian Flores returned for Year No. 3 and the fact Harrison Smith hasn’t really slowed down, at least by a 36-year-old’s safety standards, the long-time Viking will probably re-sign with the club for one more season.

Minnesota re-upped with Theo Jackson on Friday, so the 2025 safety room could be Smith, Jackson, and Josh Metellus.

Darnold to Seahawks or Steelers

The Las Vegas Raiders swung a trade for Geno Smith on Friday night, upsetting the Sam Darnold sweepstakes because most had decided he’d land in Las Vegas.

No cigar.

Now, with free agency mere hours from commencement, the Seahawks are the favored landing spot for Darnold, with offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak in play to once again work with the veteran quarterback. The two partnered together in San Francisco during the 2023 campaign.

Some call the New York Giants a dark horse for Darnold, but it’s really the Seahawks, with a side dish of Steelers.

Aaron Rodgers Fodder Not Real

We asked three sources about the realism of Aaron Rodgers in purple, and all thought the idea was silly, indicating they’d heard nothing tangible about it — other than Rodgers’ eerie Brett Favre-like career path from the 2000s.

Rodgers is the quarterback Minnesota would call if J.J. McCarthy, for example, got hurt midseason, not the guy to sign for one last ride at age 41.
