Vikings New QB Room Ready to Rock

The Minnesota Vikings let Max Brosmer shine again on Friday against the Tennessee Titans to close out the preseason schedule. Despite already having looked good during the exhibition slate, Brosmer may have turned in his best performance.
The Minnesota Vikings quarterback room is now complete after signing a veteran to play the backup QB role and making decisions on two more.
Although it may have been a reach for Brosmer to be the immediate next man up, he certainly earned a roster spot. He was never going to pass through waivers to be stashed on the practice squad. Now, though, we have clarity on who the backup will be and what the room is set to look like.

Sam Howell was awful in a Vikings uniform, and it’s legitimately shocking Minnesota got value for him when trading the quarterback to Philadelphia. After a quick workout, they also signed veteran Carson Wentz to a spot on the 53-man roster. With Brett Rypien being released, Minnesota put a stamp on the position group.
The Vikings’ QB Room Appears to Be Set
J.J. McCarthy was always going to be the starter. Wentz, who has been around two Super Bowl teams, will back him up. Brosmer transitions from a starter for the Gophers to a rostered player with the Vikings. His arrow continues to point straight up.
The choice to move on from both Howell and Rypien is telling for different reasons. Howell was a guy the Vikings acquired during the draft with the intention of operating in a backup capacity. He never showed the capability to handle that role, even despite having a full season of starting experience to his credit.

Rypien has been a Minnesota favorite for some time, earning praise despite his stint on the practice squad. Brosmer came in after going undrafted, and he ate his lunch every day at the same table as them.
The Vikings still need to make decisions for their 53-man roster. The official cutdown deadline is August 26th at 3 pm CDT. Although there are some positions still needing to be addressed, quarterback is no longer one of them. It’s McCarthy, Wentz, and Brosmer who will enroll in the Kevin O’Connell quarterback school this season.

If the former can be as good as hoped, a Super Bowl may not be out of the question. Both Wentz and Brosmer get to expand their development while holding clipboards as well.
