It’s a long shot, but the son of Randy Moss could be coming to a television screen near you — as a member of the Minnesota Vikings.

Randy Moss’ Kid Is on the Way

Montigo Moss, Randy Moss’ son, went undrafted last weekend, and the father Moss’ former team has thrown him an olive branch.

Montigo Moss to Try Out for Vikings

The Draft Network‘s Justin Melo tweeted Tuesday, “Maine Black Bears WR Montigo Moss has accepted his invite to Vikings rookie minicamp, per source. Moss is the son of Hall of Fame NFL WR Randy Moss.”

Naturally, the news spread like wildfire on social media — because how cool would it be for Montigo Moss to somehow make the Vikings’ 53-man roster?

The father Moss charted a Hall of Fame career, starting his journey in Minnesota 27 years ago and later playing for the Oakland Raiders, New England Patriots, San Francisco 49ers, and Tennessee Titans. Randy, by himself, sired a generation of Vikings fans and remains at the very front of the team’s lore to his day.

He ranks second all-time in receiving touchdowns behind Jerry Rice. He’s also the NFL’s fourth-leading receiver in league history, trailing only Rice, Larry Fitzgerald, and Terrell Owens. The closest active touchdown suitor to Moss is free-agent tight end Jimmy Graham, who is eons behind the former Viking.

Montigo’s Bio

But what about Montigo?

He’s 6’1″ and 220 pounds, pretty decent size for an NFL wide receiver. He banked 61 receptions for 722 receiving yards and 7 touchdowns at Maine in 2024, his final year at the institution.

GoBlackBears.com‘s described his 2023 campaign: “Appeared in 10 games… Had a career high in receptions with 37 catches on the year, those catches went for 408 yards and 3 touchdowns.. completed first collegiate pass for a 24 yard touchdown versus Richmond added on with 6 catches for 72 yards in that game.. Best performance of the year came versus Stony Brook with 5 catches for 108 yards and two touchdowns one of which was a spectacular one handed grab.”

The son Moss was nowhere near the draft community’s Consensus Big Board power rankings, so if he does latch on as a pro, it will become a bloodline Cinderella story.

Boston Globe on Montigo Moss

Boston Globe‘s Chad Finn wrote a piece about Montigo, nicknamed Tigo, last fall. He noted: “He’s not as fast as his father, nor as tall (he’s listed at 6 feet 1 inch, whereas Randy Moss is a lanky 6-4). But there are other similarities. He wears No. 81, Randy’s number during his three-plus seasons (2007 through the fourth game of the 2010 season, when he was traded to the Titans) with the Patriots.”

“He has the same confident grin, and the graduate for Fork Union Military School in Virginia sounds quite a bit like his father, minus the West Virginia twang. But Randy Moss’s tall shadow stretches from Minneapolis to Foxborough and then all the way back to Canton, and that hasn’t always been an easy thing to navigate.”

Minnesota doesn’t necessarily have a wide receiver opening at the moment, but that Debbie Downer take is for another day.

Finn added, “For fans of a certain age or possessing even a decent sense of NFL history, the mere mention of Randy Moss’s name is sure to summon a reel of highlights immediately to mind. He is one of the most accomplished and perhaps the most electrifying pass-catcher in NFL history.”

“But his son — known as ‘Tigo’ to friends, which seems to be just about everyone on the Maine campus — has accumulated a spectacular assortment of highlights of his own during his five seasons as a Black Bear.”

The Vikings’ Current WR Room

These are the Vikings’ wide receivers following the draft:

  • Justin Jefferson
  • Jordan Addison
  • Jalen Nailor
  • Tai Felton
  • Rondale Moore
  • Silas Bolden
  • Tim Jones
  • Lucky Jackson
  • Thayer Thomas
  • Jeshaun Jones
  • Donate Fleming
  • Robert Lewis

So, at rookie minicamp and beyond, Tigo would have to oust about seven players for a 2025 roster spot.

Realism of Montigo Moss’ Tryout

In all likelihood, Tigo will audition at Vikings minicamp, and that will be the end of the experiment. Minnesota has too many wideouts, and the son Moss may not be talented enough for the big leagues.

Tigo’s brother and Randy’s other son, Thaddeus Moss, attempted an NFL journey in 2020 but never saw a regular season field, bouncing around to various practice squads.

Tigo could end up in the UFL or CFL — like Thaddeus.

Other Notable Tryouts

Minnesota also extended a rookie minicamp invitation to Nebraska cornerback Tommi Hill. He curiously went undrafted last weekend when pundits believed he’d fly off the board in Round 5, 6, or 7.

Hill, on the other hand, could actually earn a roster spot if the tryout goes well.
