The Minnesota Vikings are one dub away from posting a winning record after starting 4-8. But according to former linebacker Erin Henderson, who played for the franchise from 2008 to 2013, head coach Kevin O’Connell is an unsatisfactory leader who does just enough to get by.

Henderson didn’t mince words this week, aiming his frustration squarely at Kevin O’Connell and reopening the debate about Minnesota’s direction.

No stranger to ripping the team that employed him for six seasons, Henderson unleashed a goofy tirade on X, formerly known as Twitter, this week.

Erin Henderson Targets Vikings Head Coach — Out of Nowhere

Henderson Randomly Tees Off on O’Connell

Everybody was minding their business, and some fans were even enjoying the Vikings’ current four-game win streak to close out an otherwise disappointing 2025 campaign. But not Henderson.

Out of nowhere, he unleashed on O’Connell, and nobody really knows why.

Henderson tweeted, “KOC winning 5 straight to give folks hope and save his job just to do it all over again next yr is so KOC😂.”

And that wasn’t all, as Henderson continued, “Stay with me. The Vikings and Texans are built the same. Both have young QBs and serviceable offenses with some playmakers. Both have proven dominant defenses. Both have ‘young’ HC. One HC is coaching to save his job. One is coaching for a Super Bowl and it’s all about attitude.”

“When you a backup QB you don’t have to do sh*t until the starter goes down. The rest of the time you good as gold as long as you can run the scout team offense. What you think KOC doing right now? Bro just hanging around, good enough to keep folks off his back. Stay with me.”

One more from Henderson: “He let this season go to sh*t when it was wide open tho. He’s not a bad coach just not the leader the Vikes need. Harvey F*ckin Dent.”

This was all unprovoked. Henderson decided on a Monday, all by himself, that O’Connell was not the right man to lead the Vikings.

A Strong Opinion Merchant

For Henderson, attacking the Vikings on social media isn’t new.

In April 2024, we went on a similarly random rant. “Folks don’t want to hear this but as long as the Vikes locker room is filled with nice guys they ain’t gonna win. Attitude reflects leadership and the Vikes are a nice family oriented organization top to bottom,” Henderson tweeted 20 months ago.

“I don’t have to be in the locker room to see tender football being played on the field. N wtf would I be bitter about. Seems like yall bitter I want to root for another team,” Henderson continued in April 2024.

In August 2024, Henderson also claimed, without evidence, that the Vikings faked McCarthy’s meniscus tear. “They were going to be fired this yr. They shut JJ9 down to buy another yr. Yall not ready for that conversation yet tho,” Henderson posted out of the blue,

He also wanted Minnesota to keep Kirk Cousins indefinitely, tweeting that summer, “They never would’ve let Kirk walk. Numbers don’t lie. They paid he produced. They would’ve paid him again. KOC and Kwesi said no. So now the Wilfs expect to compete without him. You don’t compete organization goes to find someone new to lead.”

It’s always the freshest conspiracy or hot take from Henderson, who oddly never tweets about the Vikings during good times.

O’Connell’s Shortcomings

Of course, O’Connell is not infallible. The man has weaknesses as a head coach.

For example, every offseason, he claims his team will run the football more and run more efficiently. Then, a regular season kicks off, and it’s typically more of the same, passing the ball about 60% of the time, while abandoning the rushing offense the moment the scoreboard in a game bends unfavorably.

O’Connell has also failed to achieve a Top 10 offense per efficiency metrics in four seasons, despite holding the reputation of an offensive guru and quarterback whisperer.

The skipper has areas to improve, but Henderson’s potshots might be out of bounds.

Record Since Taking Over

Why are Henderson’s criticisms too sharp? Easy — the Vikings are a winning team with O’Connell in charge.

O’Connell will be under tremendous pressure in 2026 to deliver a playoff win or two, but for now, the team is in a better spot than when he found it in early 2022.

If O’Connell does not produce a playoff triumph next season, he may indeed be terminated, and Henderson will have claimed to know the truth years in advance.
