Ex-Vikings QB Takes New Job
He’s the Green Bay Packers’ new quarterbacks coach, accepting a promotion in Wisconsin on Thursday after joining the Packers’ staff during the 2024 offseason.
ESPN’s Rob Demovsky tweeted, “The Packers are planning to hire former Patriots defensive coordinator DeMarcus Covington as their new defensive line coach and promote Sean Mannion to quarterbacks coach, sources told ESPN. Contracts not signed yet but agreements in place. Deals should be finalized soon.”
Mannion will now coach Packers passers Jordan Love, Malik Willis, and Sean Clifford.
“Covington coached the Patriots outside linebackers (2019) and defensive line (2020-2023) in New England before his one season as coordinator. Mannion, the former NFL QB, spent this past season as an offensive assistant for the Packers,” Demovsky added.
Mannion basically played hopscotch as a player between the Vikings’ roster and the Seattle Seahawks since 2019. He last played for the Vikings in 2023, although he lived on the practice squad after signing in October. Minnesota released him in December, and — you guessed it — he joined the Seahawks to wind down his career.
The Oregon State alumnus joined the NFL in 2015, a 3rd-Round pick by the St. Louis Rams. He stayed attached to the Rams for four seasons, the duration of his rookie contract, and then began the Minnesota-Seattle boomerang. Here’s his career resume to date:

Mannion started three career games in the NFL, appeared in 11 more, and tabulated 573 passing yards, 1 touchdown, and 3 interceptions. He tossed the lone touchdown pass when Kirk Cousins infamously contracted the coronavirus in 2021 before a game at the Packers, the team Mannion will now leads as quarterbacks skipper.
The man was also a frequent staple of the Vikings’ preseason festivities in the last half-decade. Current head coach Kevin O’Connell rests almost all starters in exhibition games, and the previous skipper, Mike Zimmer, generally only played such players once per preseason. Mannion always seemed to find the field for the Vikings during August.
The Packers’ offense ranked fourth leaguewide per DVOA in 2024, and Jordan Love placed 10th in EPA/Play.
Mannion will turn 33 in April. He’ll report to Green Bay offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich.
