Where Art Thou Vikings QB2?

Drops One Hint

There have been some good stories from the Minnesota Vikings in recent seasons. You’ll have to turn the dial back a bit to get Adam Thielen’s history, but he remains chief among them. Thielen was a Minnesota kid who went to a Division 2 school and worked himself into a position as a prominent wide receiver across the entire NFL.

The Minnesota Vikings need to figure out their backup quarterback, and even a strong performance from Max Brosmer may keep him from being it.

Max Brosmer doesn’t have quite the same luster. He isn’t from Minnesota, and he only played a single season for the Gophers. Still, he put up one of the best seasons in program history, and hopefully, his production is a launching point for the next phase of P.J. Fleck’s success.

After inexplicably going undrafted, Brosmer landed with the Vikings as a free agent and is competing for backup duties behind starter J.J. McCarthy. He has looked infinitely better than trade acquisition Sam Howell, and that’s notable because the former North Carolina product started a significant amount of games for the Washington Commanders.

The Vikings May Need an Alternative QB2

At this point, it’s becoming abundantly clear that the Vikings should cut Howell. He’s not good, he hasn’t been good, and he takes every opportunity to show you why. Brosmer is earning a roster spot now because of Howell’s ineptitude, but despite it. If Minnesota thinks they can pass him through waivers just because he went undrafted, they’ll be sorely mistaken.

The problem for Brosmer is that he has about the same level of experience at the professional level as McCarthy does. Minnesota should roster Brosmer because he can continue to be developed into a legitimate NFL-caliber quarterback. They should also shield him by putting a body between him and McCarthy.

It’s easy to see a cut for Howell. Understandably, Minnesota loves Brett Rypien. That doesn’t mean he’s the answer either. The Browns have a ton of potential quarterbacks, and Kenny Pickett could be on the outs. The New York Giants have a ton too, which may make Jameis Winston expendable.

If either of those veteran backups hit the open market, then the Vikings should fine themselves with a desire to pounce. Ideally, McCarthy is the second coming of Patrick Mahomes, and he never suffers an injury. That would mean the backup situation is a non-factor for Minnesota. You can’t operate under that guise, though, and an emergency plan of attack has to be in place.

Max Brosmer is a quarterback the Vikings should roster. He’s probably not the QB2 type, and the current selection may not have that guy present at all.
