Vikings Territory Breakdown
The offseason begins today! With the franchise tag window opening on Feb. 18, let the maneuvering begin. The Vikings have a big decision in this realm with quarterback Sam Darnold, who had his best season as a pro and led the Vikings to a 14-3 regular-season record. Unfortunately, for Sam and the Purple, we might not be here if it weren’t for those last two Vikings games of the season/postseason—two bitterly disappointing losses to playoff teams. Therefore, the decision on what to do with Darnold and the QB position in general beings with the tag window opening.
Do the Vikings tag Darnold (which would cost them approximately $40 million dollars in that tagged season? Do they begin negotiations on a multiyear Darnold contract (which would likely start around $40 million mark)? Or do they tag him and trade him, presuming the Vikings already have a willing trading partner in their sights?
Lots of questions for this position (and we haven’t even mentioned second-year man J.J. McCarthy coming off season-ending knee surgery), but that’s what the fellas at Vikings Territory Breakdown podcast—Joe Oberle, senior writer at vikingsterritory.com and purplePTSD.com and Mark Craig, NFL and Vikings writer for the Star Tribune and startribune.com—are here to assist with. We will start the conversation on Darnold, pivot to some of the other aging free agents the Vikings must make decisions on and then get younger by taking a look at the upcoming NFL Combine. The Vikings, presumably will get younger, not VT Breakdown guys. But a guy can dream. Tune in and check it out. Skol!!!
