The Carson Wentz Game Must Happen

The Minnesota Vikings are set to face off against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium. Their quarterback situation is murky at best, and both Carson Wentz and J.J. McCarthy have injury concerns tied to them. There’s only one quarterback Kevin O’Connell can logically start on Sunday, though.
It’s the Carson Wentz game.
In 2017, it was Wentz, the North Dakota State draftee, who led the Eagles to an 11-2 record through 13 games. Then he suffered an injury and watched backup Nick Foles step in and win the Super Bowl with his Philadelphia Eagles. His career has never been the same since, and this is an opportunity for him to exact revenge.

There is no indication as to whether Carson Wentz or J.J. McCarthy will start this week for the Minnesota Vikings, but the answer is clear.
Now playing for the team he grew up cheering for, Wentz is living out his childhood dream. It would be great to see him with the Vikings in their first Super Bowl, but on the way to that reality, it would be well-deserved to see him best the team with which he won his ring.
Why Carson Wentz Deserves the Nod on Sunday
Wentz is dealing with a shoulder injury to his non-throwing arm, but he has now had the bye week to heal from that. While there is a level of concern regarding his physical ability, the same premise applies to J.J. McCarthy.

The youngster has seen multiple different timelines reported for his return after suffering a high ankle sprain. Obviously, only the Minnesota Vikings know their plans, and the injury reports throughout the week will be telling as to what will ultimately take place. McCarthy made the two-week journey overseas with the Minnesota team, but he never set foot on the practice field.
After missing multiple weeks with his injury, it makes sense to give McCarthy the entirety of the runway needed before returning to action. He put together limited positive plays while starting out of the gate, and there is no reason to rush him back.

If Wentz balls out against the Eagles and generates a greater quarterback controversy, so be it. The greater reality is that he orchestrates a win over Philadelphia, but does so to a level of mediocrity. At that point, it’s straightforward to go back to the situation you intended to roll with, and McCarthy can start from there.
Regardless, because it’s the Eagles, it has to be Wentz.
