How High Can the Vikings EDGE Game Fly?

Last season, the Minnesota Vikings turned over their edge rush to a tandem of new talents. Gone was Danielle Hunter, and in came Jonathan Greenard and Andrew Van Ginkel. Even after signing a pair of edge rushers in free agency, they jumped up in the draft to grab Dallas Turner.
The Minnesota Vikings EDGE rushers could be among the best in the NFL this season, and if they’re going to get there, Dallas Turner will be involved.
That seemed like an odd strategy, and it became even more questionable as Dallas Turner struggled to get on the field. The Vikings continued to suggest that Turner’s playing time, or lack thereof, was due to the talent ahead of him.

Given just how impressive Greenard and Van Ginkel looked, it’s hard to argue with that notion. Greenard just missed a career-high (12.5) sack total but finished with 12.0. Van Ginkel’s 11.5 sacks were easily a career high, and the total tally from the starters was an impressive result.

Across 14 games, Turner contributed just three sacks. He didn’t receive the same opportunities, but he also only showed minimal flashes. If the Vikings are going to see the payoff they believe is ready to present itself, Turner needs to ascend the leaderboard alongside his teammates.

With Greenard, Van Ginkel, and Turner, there is plenty of opportunity for defensive coordinator Brian Flores to keep the trio fresh. Greenard and Van Ginkel don’t need to stay on the field constantly, and Turner being a capable rotation option is something the team should be excited about.
There are plenty of edge rushers across the league that rack up sacks and generate impressive individual tallies. The Vikings are either going to set records with their trio, or they could push one of the most impressive team totals across the entirety of the league. Either one would be an ideal outcome, but the best includes Turner.

Minnesota invested substantial draft capital in the former Alabama product, and they’d prefer to see dividends early in the contract. The secondary still has realistic questions on the edges, and the more the Vikings can get and succeed on a pass rush, the better off the overall outcome can be.
