Timing is everything. That’s a statement that is true throughout life, but a perfect storm could be lining up for the “other” young Vikings QB. Opportunity could be about to knock for Max Brosmer after JJ McCarthy entered the concussion protocol following the Green Bay game.

VikingsTerritory examines how the timing could be perfect for one Vikings QB, with the caveat that not expecting miracles.

Concussions are taken extremely seriously in modern sport. Coupled with McCarthy’s struggles on the field, no one should be surprised if the team is very cautious with him.

If Brosmer does get the call to play this Sunday, he will be deputizing for a QB who has been playing at a historically bad level in recent weeks. McCarthy has been completing just 54.1% of his passes, which is not a high bar for an incoming QB to better — it’s a dream scenario.

Vikings QB Max Brosmer Has Big Moment This Weekend

We shouldn’t expect miracles from Brosmer in his potential first start, but if he can be average, that would be an improvement for Minnesota. Already well-connected with the local fanbase through his University of Minnesota ties, Brosmer will get strong backing if he can prove himself serviceable. If he can get the ball out on time and accurately to Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and co, they can do the rest, and suddenly this Vikings offense might start to tick.

Preparing to Be QB1

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell spoke early in the week about his confidence in Brosmer should he be needed to play. Praising his preparation week in, week out since signing with the team. Brosmer himself said his mindset is always to prepare as if he is the QB1, so he is ready when the moment arrives. Since arriving in Minnesota, Brosmer has seen off Sam Howell to land on the roster and, by virtue of being healthy, Carson Wentz to land in this spot.

O’Connell also spoke about Brosmer’s performance against the Titans’ first-team unit in the third preseason game this year. In that game, Brosmer completed 15 of 23 passes for 161 yards and a touchdown.

The Vikings head coach spoke about how he moved the team, got the ball out on time, and was seeing things at a veteran level type of eye progression. Basically, all the things McCarthy hasn’t been doing this season and what the Vikings skipper wants from his QB. If Brosmer can showcase these things in a regular-season game, the argument to keep him in when McCarthy is healthy will have a case.

It’s unlikely that an undrafted QB comes in and proves himself the answer to replace a failing first-round pick, but it’s not unheard of. You only have to look at Brock Purdy replacing Trey Lance in San Francisco in a system from the same coaching tree as O’Connell.

Expectations for Brosmer becoming the team’s franchise QB are getting way ahead of themselves. Right now, if Brosmer gets the chance to play, he just needs to show he can be competent under center, with the potential to grow.

If Brosmer is named this week’s starter, John Wolford will serve as the team’s QB2.
