Crawling from the Wreckage of Another Purple Collapse

Vikings Territory Breakdown Podcast

After most professional sporting event, participants need and are granted a cooling off period before the media is allowed to enter the locker room and interview them. It’s because emotions are raw and the players need some time to collect themselves before talking to the media/public. Well, following the Vikings lost to the Los Angele Rams in the Wild Card playoff game 27-9 last Monday night, Purple Nation needed a cooling off period before looking forward to next season . . . again. And the writer of this piece counts himself among them.

The Vikings had fallen flat in a big spot, just one week after doing the same thing against the Detroit Lions (and like they have done many times in their tortured history). They fell so hard that the game was over by halftime and that old familiar feeling of anger, sadness and despair returned to the Viking Faithful long before the final gun, and fans needed time to work towards resignation and looking ahead. So, now, on Thursday, with cooler heads and remnants of those bad feelings still lingering in our hearts we begin again, lamenting the game and looking forward to next season.

We had expected more out of a 14-3 team, though the previous week’s game warned us not to expect so much. But as fans, we did anyway, and fell hard with our team, pointing fingers at certain players and coaches and officials, trying to make sense out of it. Well, coming to terms with this reality won’t come easy, and looking forward we must recognize that some big changes must and will be made to this team. Expect them to start happening before some other team’s personnel are hoisting the Lombardi Trophy in February.

We have the whole offseason to dissect this exciting yet deflating 2024 season, and it begins now, with the fellas at Vikings Territory Breakdown podcast—Joe Oberle, senior writer at vikingsterritory.com and purplePTSD.com and Mark Craig, NFL and Vikings writer for the Star Tribune and startribune.com. We don’t yet have all the answers, but we promise to start working towards them. Tune in and check it out. Skol!!!!!
