Why Boo Kirk Cousins? He’s Already Down Bad.

The Nationals Folks Picking the Vikings over Bills

The Minnesota Vikings face off against the Atlanta Falcons this weekend. That means Kirk Cousins returns to U.S. Bank Stadium for the first time as an opponent. He got paid a boatload this offseason and flew the coop. Unfortunately, he’s learning that the grass isn’t always greener and that alone is reason enough not to boo the man.

Why Boo Kirk Cousins? He’s Already Down Bad.

There has never been an opportunity to squeeze money for which Cousins hasn’t been down. He’s made a career of turning mediocre performance into massive paydays. Good for him. He has absolutely capitalized on his value at every opportunity, and that’s something that all of us should strive to replicate.

When Cousins played for the Vikings, he was widely celebrated as a solid member of the organization. He would never be capable of winning a Super Bowl on his own, and he only elevated the team so much. Of course, it was disappointing when he left, but as the dominoes fell in his absence, everything improved for the Vikings.

Cousins will likely get some tribute video on Sunday. The reaction may be mixed, but there is zero reason to boo the man. He already is part of a lesser organization that has achieved just a 6-6 record this season. Cousins hasn’t succeeded with the talent around him, and he is leading the league in interceptions. If the money weren’t keeping him warm, then he would already be down bad.

Plenty of players have worn the purple and gold only to leave for another opportunity. The NFL is not designed to have players stick with a single organization throughout their careers. Cousins hit the open market, and he found a landing spot that made sense for him and his family.

When the Falcons quarterback steps on the field Sunday, cheer him for what he was here. The Vikings achieved a level of consistency they had otherwise failed to achieve. He was routinely available, and while the ceiling wasn’t substantial, he raised the floor of the position as well. Because of Cousins, the Vikings were able to establish a new set of expectations at the most critical position in sports.

Ultimately you want to see him lose, and the Falcons continue to struggle, but there’s no reason to boo him in the process.
