It’s Kirk Cousins Week, but the Vikings Already Won.

The Minnesota Vikings face off against Kirk Cousins and the Atlanta Falcons this weekend. You obviously know the name as the quarterback who shops with Kohl’s cash but cashes Dior checks. After he ran to the money this offseason, his new team expected him to be their missing piece for a Super Bowl run. That hasn’t gone as planned, and they will be sizable underdogs on Sunday.

When Kirk Cousins comes back to town, the reception should be solid. He was an upstanding member of the community, and while under center for the Minnesota Vikings, Cousins was a consistent presence. He never could elevate himself or the team, but you knew what you were getting from him.

The problem for the Atlanta Falcons is that they absolutely did not know what they were getting. Cousins has always been a byproduct of his surroundings. He was at his best in Minnesota because of the weapons provided to him. He elevated from Washington because of the weapons he possessed there. Drake London, Kyle Pitts, and Bijan Robinson are all nice, but they are the group that Kevin O’Connell continues to run onto the field.

There is no greater evidence of this than the season that Sam Darnold is having. Of course, the Vikings head coach looks like a quarterback whisperer and a savant. To a certain extent, he absolutely is that. O’Connell is an amazing leader and has shown an ability to get the most out of his team. He galvanizes a locker room, and given the talent he has, it’s not exactly a shock that the Vikings have surpassed expectations.

All of that being said, the Vikings come out looking like geniuses in letting Cousins walk. Darnold will command a significant contract this offseason because of what he is doing for Minnesota at just $10 million. He has produced career-high tallies virtually across the board, and he looks every bit like the quarterback drafted as a first-round prospect.

There was never any reason to harbor ill will toward Cousins and hurt feelings quickly evaporated when Darnold took the field. He has been a better quarterback this season, and the money hasn’t even been considered in the equation. Atlanta already wishes they could get out of Cousins’ deal, but on Sunday, he’s the man who has to get the job done.

It’s a tough spot, and we have seen how Kirko has played in plenty of those before.
