Former Viking Waived by Super Bowl Contender

In his tenure with the Minnesota Vikings, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has made two selections in the first round. His most recent one, wideout Jordan Addison, was a wonderful pick. He has totally lived up to the already high expectations. The first pick, Lewis Cine, hasn’t been a factor in his first two campaigns, shaping up to be an infamous pick in franchise history.

Another one of those infamous picks is Laquon Treadwell, Rick Spielman’s first-rounder in 2016. He needed a wideout and he drafted one, ending in a total nightmare.

His last gig was with the Baltimore Ravens where he signed in June. For the majority of the season, Treadwell was stashed on the practice squad, waiting for his chance. On December 30, he was signed to the 53-man roster but waived on Monday, the team announced.

Coming out of Ole Miss, Treadwell ended up as the 23rd-overall pick, the fourth receiver taken. Like Treadwell, the other three also didn’t succeed much in their careers. Corey Coleman and Josh Doctson are afterthoughts, while Will Fuller had some decent seasons but hasn’t played a game since 2021.

In 2022 alone, Treadwell was on four different teams. He was a part of the Patriots and Cardinals practice squads for a few weeks after the Jaguars released him before the season began. He eventually ended up with the Seattle Seahawks, where he had six receptions for 42 yards.

Treadwell’s top campaign came in the previous year, in 2021. He played under head coach Urban Meyer in Jacksonville and caught 33 passes for a career-high 434 yards and 1 touchdown.

Throughout his career, the receiver has played in 81 games and caught 111 passes for 1,242 yards and 5 touchdowns. In the four years with the Vikings, Treadwell played 53 games, including 16 starts. That resulted in 65 catches for 701 yards and 2 scores. Of course, the team expected much more from their first-rounder.

Adam Thielen had his breakout season during Treadwell’s rookie campaign, and Stefon Diggs continued his rise to stardom. The circumstances weren’t good for the young receiver during his time in Minnesota as he was buried on the depth chart. He never lived up to his pre-draft hype and the word bust isn’t too far-fetched.

There is a decent chance the Ravens re-sign Treadwell to the practice squad to call him up in their playoff run if needed as there isn’t any time to get a new player comfortable in the system. His roster spot could be used for the return of star tight end Mark Andrews. The Ravens could also add Dalvin Cook to the 53-man roster who is currently on the team’s practice squad.
