Vikings Future Wobbly with McCarthy Knee Injury

Vikings Territory Breakdown Podcast

Another day, another setback for the 2024 Minnesota Vikings, as head coach Kevin O’Connell announced his rookie quarterback would done for the season. JJ McCarthy, who played well in his limited role on Saturday in his first NFL Preseason game, tore the meniscus in his right knee and had surgery on Wednesday to repair it. Since it was a repair and not a trim procedure, McCarthy is done for the year.

That means that Sam Darnold, who was the starter in the first game against the Las Vegas Raiders, will be named the starter for the 2024 Minnesota Vikings. McCarthy had brought notion into full focus when he threw for 188 yards and two touchdown (and one bad pick) passes in his debut. He looked poised with pocket presence, was accurate and efficient (albeit against vanilla, second-string preseason defenses). But McCarthy excited the fan base with his play and then just as quickly dashed their hopes for the year with the injury. Oh, to be a Viking fan.

The Vikings are in Cleveland for joint practices with the Browns and made other news to discuss—Jordan Addison injury, the Andrew Booth trade and other acquisitions—and we’ve got you covered. The fellas at Vikings Territory Breakdown podcast (Joe Oberle, senior writer at vikingsterritory.com and purplePTSD.com and Mark Craig, NFL and Vikings writer for the Star Tribune and startribune.com) will break it all down.
