Salary Cap Increase Can Change the Vikings Offseason

By Joe Oberle

Vikings Territory Breakdown Podcast

The NFL salary cap went up this week to $255.4 million for 2024 season, up record $30.6 million from 2023. What does it mean? How does it affect the free agency market? How does it affect the Vikings situation which has to figure out what to do with pricy free agents to be, including Kirk Cousins, DE Danielle Hunter and the best player on their team in wide receiver Justin Jefferson? The bottom line is that increased money helps the Purple, but by how much?

When the news hit on the salary cap, it came across as a surprise to most industry experts due to the amount of money the cap went up. Of course, places on the internet, such as reddit, speculated that the reason for the big jump had to do with a lot of new eye-balls on the league this past season—and we all know why there were so many new “fans,” right? The Taylor Swift factor.

Now whether or not that is true (and even further if such a thing is sustainable), it certainly is a topic of discussion—as if everything related to the Vikings and the NFL just a couple weeks short of the new league year. And discussion the Purple is what the fellas at the Vikings Territory Breakdown podcast (Joe Oberle, senior writer at vikingsterritory and purplePTSD.com and Mark Craig, NFL and Vikings writer for the Star Tribune and startribune.com) are all about.

We will examine the new cap numbers, figure out if this helps sign Kirk or whether the team should go after a bridge quarterback not named Kirk Cousins when they draft their QBOTF. Tune in and check it out.
