Popular Vikings Doomsday Theory Turned Out to Be Incorrect

The 2024 version of the mandatory minicamp is in the books for the Minnesota Vikings. Some fascinating storylines emerged from TCO Performance Center in Eagan, Minnesota. One of them was N’Keal Harry’s surprising move to tight end. The underwhelming wideout could have a career resurgence because of that. No development, however, can beat Justin Jefferson’s contract extension, at least in terms of significance for the organization.

Jefferson joined the franchise in 2020 when Rick Spielman selected him with the 22nd overall pick. He received some help from the WR-needy Eagles and general manager Howie Roseman, who preferred Jalen Reagor for inexplicable reasons.

It took the former LSU standout only three weeks to showcase his entire talent in a dominant performance versus the Tennessee Titans, ending with 175 receiving yards and his first touchdown in the NFL. Fast-forward to the 2024 offseason, the Vikings needed to extend his contract with only the fifth-year option, preventing the star player from becoming an unrestricted free agent.

A popular talker within the fanbase was the mystery at quarterback and how that would impact the receiver’s future. Undoubtedly, having a solid signal-caller helps any wideout, and Jefferson benefited from Kirk Cousins’s stable play. His future, however, was in jeopardy entering the offseason as he was scheduled to hit free agency.

The fan theory suggested that Jefferson wouldn’t want to continue his journey with the Vikes if they decided to part ways with the team captain. Requesting a trade to the Cincinnati Bengals to reunite with former college teammates Ja’Marr Chase and Joe Burrow appeared in the rumor mill.

In February, Jefferson said: “Kirk is great as a teammate, as a person,” the former LSU standout stated when asked about Cousins. “Just seeing the difference from having multiple quarterbacks throw to you versus having that one main quarterback. It’s definitely a difference. You appreciate it a little bit more. I feel like everyone, especially Vikings fans, appreciate Kirk a little bit more now that we’ve seen him off the field. It’s been great to see him in the training room interacting with us as a team, still having that high spirit. I guess we will see.”

Cousins indeed departed, joining the Atlanta Falcons after agreeing to a remarkable four-year contract that eclipsed everything the Vikings were willing to offer. Sam Darnold was signed after a one-year stint as Brock Purdy’s backup in San Francisco and a tumultuous five-year stretch with the New York Jets and the Carolina Panthers.

The idea is that Darnold is growing up, which leads to fewer mistakes. He has always had some arm talent, but the turnovers made it hard to trust the former third-overall pick. However, Darnold was hardly viewed as more than a bridge quarterback who could step in until a rookie joined the club.

General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah had one major task on his to-do list entering the draft: acquiring a new passer. After failing to trade up to the third spot to claim Drake Maye, he moved only one rank to select J.J. McCarthy, Michigan’s national champion. The prospect didn’t put up huge numbers in college, but his combination of athleticism and mistake-free play made him an intriguing player for coaches.

The Vikings now need to prepare an offense for both Darnold and McCarthy. That offense will undoubtedly feature Jefferson as a frequent target in the passing game.

The receiver didn’t give an ultimatum and continued to be part of the organization even without Cousins under center. However, he might have changed his tune had the team not ended up with a talented rookie.

Jefferson is under team control for five more seasons, and McCarthy signs the obligatory four-year rookie deal with a fifth-year team option. If the passer can develop into a decent player, the duo could be one of the better tandems in the entire league. The crucial step is to connect with one another to duplicate any previous success with Cousins.

In the final four games of the 2023 season, Jefferson registered 476 yards and two touchdowns, with Nick Mullens and Jaren Hall throwing him the ball, indicating that he will produce big numbers with anyone throwing him the ball.
