3rd Major Injury in 10 Days Rocks NFL

The Dallas Cowboys have sprinted to a hot start in 2023, battering both New York teams to the tune of a 70-10 point differential.

And for the rest of the way, Dallas will try to reach the Super Bowl for the first time in 28 years sans one of its top performers, cornerback Trevon Diggs.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted Thursday, “MRI confirmed the Cowboys’ belief, per source; Trevon Diggs suffered a torn ACL during today’s practice.”

In a 10-day span, these NFLers, among others, have been lost for the season:

  • Aaron Rodgers (Week 1, Torn Achilles Tendon)
  • Nick Chubb (Week 2, Knee)
  • Trevon Diggs (Week 3, Torn ACL)

NFL Network’s Jane Slater tweeted about Dallas’ plans after the Diggs injury, “I’m told the plan in light of the Trevon Diggs injury (season ending ACL tear) is to move DaRon Bland outside, Jourdan Lewis goes inside and you got Noah Igbinoghene for depth per a team source.”

Diggs is a two-time Pro Bowler (2021, 2022) and one-time 1st-Team All-Pro (2021), putting the NFL on notice in his second season with a mammoth 11 interceptions, almost a throwback stat to the Paul Krause era. Through two games in 2023, Diggs posted an 80.7 Pro Football Focus grade, or the sixth-best in the sport among CBs.

The 2023 campaign got off to a rocky start injury-wise when the aforementioned Rodgers tore his Achilles tendon just four days into his New York Jets career. New York was a Vegas darling to perhaps reach or win the Super Bowl, but Rodgers’ exit-stage-left severely dampened that theory.

Rodgers also claims he could return for the postseason if the Jets make the tournament, although that sounds like best-laid plans and not reality.

Then in Week 2, Nick Chubb was awkwardly tackled versus the Pittsburgh Steelers, bending his knee in an unnatural direction — also on Monday Night Football like the Rodgers injury — and will miss the rest of the 2023 season, if not more. The Browns will turn to running back Jerome Ford in Chubb’s stead, with a side dish of Kareem Hunt, signed after Chubb’s injury this week.

Rodgers, Chubb, and Diggs. Three men with 16 combined Pro Bowl appearances in 10 days.

The Cowboys are the NFL’s top team through two weeks — by a mile — per DVOA.
