Tumult follows Stefon Diggs. Either that — or he creates it.

The All-Pro wideout forced his way off the Minnesota Vikings roster three years ago, latching on rather snugly to the Buffalo Bills depth chart while the purple team used the trade capital to land a guy named Justin Jefferson in the draft.

The arrangement was wonderful, and nary a Vikings fan laments the transaction.

But fast forward to the summer of 2023, and Diggs may or may not be up to the same tricks, disgruntled about his spot on the Bills roster, or merely the victim of poor reporting.

The stentorian one, Stephen A. Smith, claimed this week that Diggs isn’t a happy camper. In a nutshell, Diggs is effectuating the same path beset upon the Vikings in 2019, according to Smith.

“Brother wants out, I’m just telling you what I know. He don’t want to be in Buffalo anymore. I have my sources. Stefon Diggs has got to be there, but he’d prefer to be gone because he’s lost a level of belief in the Buffalo Bills,” Smith said on ESPN’s First Take Monday.

Smith didn’t mince words, nibble around edges, fire up the Brian Windhorst meme, or hold back. He point-blank told millions that Diggs was ready to depart Buffalo.

But Diggs, not fond of didacts, almost immediately swatted away the noise. He tweeted Monday afternoon, “100% not true. I don’t know who the source ???? is but I thought i nip this shit in the bud already.”

Truth to all rumors? Not anymore, evidently.

Since Diggs’ arrival in Buffalo, the Bills have reigned as an AFC frontrunner to reach the Super Bowl — without actually reaching February football. The Kansas City Chiefs and Cincinnati Bengals always thwart the fancy ‘this is the Bills year’ prophecies.

And when the Bengals flogged the Bills seven months ago in an AFC Divisional Round playoff game, the lasting memory involved — you guessed it — Diggs’ ire on the sidelines.

Then in June, the Bills kicked off minicamp, and Diggs was allegedly absent. That propelled a weird news cycle where Diggs was actually there, according to his representation, although head coach Sean McDermott said he was not. Folks later learned that Diggs was there but left prematurely — as if that would explain the early-summer chaos.

Diggs concluded his social media footprint from Monday by tweeting, “Rocking wit my dawgs… Bills mafia ❤️???? through and through !!!”

Ergo, Smith’s sources are either fundamentally wrong, Diggs is falsifying for damage control, or somewhere in between. For now, it feels like winning football games will tame the alleged tomfoolery, whereas an underwhelming start to the season could create commotion.

Since joining the Bills three years ago, Diggs ranks fourth leaguewide in receiving yards behind Justin Jefferson, Davante Adams, and Tyreek Hill.
