The Minnesota Vikings made a number of surprising cuts over the past few days as they trimmed their roster down to 53 players.

Many of the cuts went to the waiver wire over the past 24 hours, but only 1 former Viking was actually claimed off of waivers. That player is TE Ben Sims, who now heads to the Green Bay Packers.

The Sims waiver claim was reported by Tom Pelissero via Twitter, who posted a photo of the full list. Sims performed very well for the Vikings this summer, but with the extreme depth above him (T.J. Hockenson, Josh Oliver, Johnny Mundt, and Nick Muse), he became expendable.

Sims appeared in all three preseason games for the Vikings this summer, and he recorded 3 receptions that went for 53 yards. He also could have had a 42-yard grab at the end of the game against Arizona, but Jaren Hall was past the line of scrimmage when he let go of the pass.

Now, the tight end joins the Packers 53-man roster that includes a very young TE room. Green Bay selected both Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft during Day 2 of the 2023 NFL Draft. They also employ Tyler Davis, but he is on IR.

Sims spent his collegiate years at Baylor where he recorded 78 receptions for 785 yards and 12 receiving TDs. He joined the Vikings this spring as an undrafted free agent.

Meanwhile, this is great news for other Vikings who were waived over the past couple days. Names like Alan Ali, DeWayne McBride, and Luiji Vilain could all be headed back to Minnesota on the practice squad to begin the season.
