On Tuesday afternoon, the compensatory picks for the 2022 NFL Draft were officially announced. A grand total of 39 selections were dished out from rounds three through seven between 15 teams. However, one team that completely missed out on getting an extra draft pick was the Minnesota Vikings.

This is of very little surprise considering the Vikings were extremely active during the 2021 free agency period while retaining their key contributors from the 2020 season. Of course, their spending spree from a year ago included players like Patrick Peterson, Xavier Woods, and Bashaud Breeland.

While it is of little surprise that the Vikings did not receive any compensation, this is relatively new territory for the franchise. It is the first time since the 2017 draft that the Vikings will not receive any compensatory draft picks.

Making this a bigger loss, in each of these drafts the Vikings have had multiple compensatory picks. Most recently, you may remember the Vikings sent No. 143 to the Jets as part of the trade that helped MInnesota land the 23rd overall pick where they selected Christian Darrisaw in 2021. They also dealt No. 223 in the 2021 draft to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for Mason Cole. Cole started seven games for the Vikings between guard and center this past year.

Finally, this lack of compensation means that, barring a trade, the Vikings will in fact head into April’s draft with eight selections. They are as follows:

  • First Round (No. 12)
  • Second Round (No. 46)
  • Third Round (No. 77)
  • Fifth Round via BAL (No. 156)
  • Sixth Round via NYJ (No. 184)
  • Sixth Round (No. 192)
  • Sixth Round via KC (No. 209)
  • Seventh Round via DEN (No. 233)
