Report: Case Keenum Could Follow Pat Shurmur to New Team in 2018

By Sean Borman

An NFL team could get a bundle while the Vikings sport a new look on offense in 2018.

According to Adam Shefter of ESPN, Minnesota Vikings quarterback Case Keenum could follow Pat Shurmur to a new team if he’s hired elsewhere as a head coach.

The Vikings offensive coordinator has received interest from multiple NFL teams, including the Arizona Cardinals, Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions and New York Giants. Shurmur, 52, has run Minnesota’s offense since November of 2016.

Shefter said the Cardinals and Giants stand out as possible destinations for the duo. Both teams could be in the market for a quarterback this offseason. Keenum’s contract with Minnesota is up after the season.

The article goes on to say that Keenum, 29, and Shurmur “both think very highly of each other,” leaving one to wonder which direction the two will take after the Vikings season concludes.

Keenum excelled in Shurmur’s offense during the regular season. He went 11-3 as a starter, throwing for career-highs of 3,547 passing yards and 22 touchdowns while tossing seven interceptions.

The futures of both men likely hinge on how Minnesota’s postseason plays out. The Vikings first playoff game is Sunday, January 14th against Carolina or New Orleans.

  • Arizona would mean a bit less pressure for the both of them, although Keenum seems to handle it especially well.

Hey Sean, I seem to have lost your e-mail address. May I have it again?

    • Question is, if we win a Super Bowl… do we let them both walk? Or tag Keenum? Should be interesting.

      • Union man that I am, I'm loathe to use the franchise tag on Keenum or to stand in the way of Shurmur taking the job that he wants. On the other hand, I'd happily offer Shurmur top-OC-in-the-league money to stay, but I'm still not ready to crack open the wall safe and the Wilf grandkids' piggy banks to overpay for Keenum, SB ring or not (Ha! Ha! As if the Wilfs would ever not make the fans or the taxpayers reimburse their grandkids.). A QB Top 15 or 20 salary, sure, but don't guarantee too much of the money (I know, I know, my union brothers and sisters are NOT happy with that answer).

        • Couldn't agree more. I'd gladly pay Shurmur top money to stay on as the OC. Like I've said before he has a pretty good situation here (without a whole lot of oversight), but my guess is he'd like to become a head coach sooner rather than later. Would be VERY happy if he stuck around but he deserves another shot at HC.

As far as Keenum's salary, I believe the postseason outcome will determine that. I don't see him going anywhere. We've all seen what he has done for other teams... he's proven himself here. I think he agrees to a multi-year extension in the offseason. The franchise tag seems like a worse-case scenario at this point, and it would be tough to divvy out that kind of money without a ring.
