Brinkley Leaves For Sunnier Days

By Adam Warwas

It has been pretty evident that the Vikings were more than willing to move on into the future without linebacker Jasper Brinkley on the roster.  Now, Brinkley has made certain that’ll be the case by moving on himself.

Brinkley visited with the New York Giants and Arizona Cardinals as an unrestricted free agent, and on Thursday he chose the Cardinals.

According to PFT, Brinkley signed a two year deal with Arizona, and the Vikings are currently without a middle linebacker.

For those keeping track at home, the Vikings have lost one player (Brinkley) but have not signed any unrestricted free agents that would count against their 2014 compensatory draft pick formula.  Matt Cassel won’t count against the formula because he wasn’t an unrestricted free agent, he was cut.

  • The MLB questions are:
Do the Vikings see Manti Te'o as the answer?
Do the Vikings like Audie Cole enough to give him the starting job?
Did the quick signing of Erin Henderson this year mean the Vikings could lean on him to play the middle for more than just nickle situations?

    • like Audie Cole enough to give him the starting job?
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! - he was active in less than 6 games if I recall correct. I would say that as of right now he will compete with whoever we bring in, to be a BACKUP for the MLB.

      • I hope the Vikes don"t see Manti Teo as the answer. He will be eaten alive in the NFL.

      • I like Audie I think he's very underrated, had he run the 40 .1 seconds faster he would have been a 2nd day pick imo. That said I'd still like us to get Klein out of Iowa State to compete.

        • He can't be that underrated if he couldn't beat out Brinkley and was inactive for most games.

          • This is from the same coach who thought Joe Webb could start a playoff game vs the packers. Well have to wait and see but I think he could be a solid starter in the league think Dan Connor/Chase Blackburn type MLB.

    • Arthur Brown is light years better than Teo. That's one guy I Hope the Vikes can get.

      • I'm not a fan of Arthur at all, Teo will be better and we could find a better LB than brown in the 4th round.

        • I watched him during the combine and Teo runs like he is wearing cement shoes and is very stiff.

  • Off topic: Why is Jared Allen dining out with Greg Jennings and the Vikings brass? Is JA willing to rework his contract to help land Jennings?

    • Its a sales pitch, he was there the same reason Chevy dealerships have a Corvette and Ford's have a Raptor next to the front door... They want to show off their goods, that and everyone likes Jared Allen. AD should have been there too if they really wanted Jennings.

  • I still have this horrible feeling that the Vikes are so desperate to sign Jennings to cushion the blow for cutting Winfield and trading Harvin, that they are going to way way way overpay for Jennings.

    • I agree but Jennings is a guy that can come in and do a lot of what Harvin was doing. He can get open and catch 80 plus balls if he stays heathy. A couple young WRs could learn a lot from him.

Think about Jennings, Wright, Simpson and plug in any one of the top 6-7 WRs in this class... and the Vikings are looking pretty solid.

Jennings would give the Vikings a little more room to draft a DT, LB or DB in the early rounds

  • Unfortunately with our QB and stadium situation the only way to get a decent receiver to MN is to draft them or overpay them.

    • Greg Jennings is used to playing outdoors in Lambeau. In should feel natural to him.

  • Seeing what happens with Jennings reminds me of the movie Caddyshack with Ted Knight saying " Well, we're waiting!"

  • The market has really gone South in a hurry. Antoine Cason, a 16 game starting corner does a one year $2 million contract with incentives. There are some opportunities out there that I would have liked to see the Vikes go after. Arrelious Benn got traded for what amounts to a flop of 6/7th round picks and a conditional choice next year. With the amount of low round draft picks we have, that's a deal I would have liked us to get in on. I don't know, I'm not trying to judge too harshly but other teams are starting to come up with with some bargains. If they overpay for Jennings I'm going to be unhappy.
