Vikings Were In The Mix For Boldin

By Adam Warwas

On the same day that the Vikings receiver depth chart was blown to smithereens  by a deal that sent Percy Harvin to Seattle, Rick Spielman made his first attempt at reconstructing it.

And he missed.

Pro Football Talk reports that the Vikings offered a seventh round pick to the Baltimore Ravens in exchange for 32 year old Anquan Boldin and his $6 million salary.  The San Francisco 49ers, who couldn’t be happy about Percy Harvin just joining their division rivals, were the high bidder with a sixth round pick.

Immediately following the Harvin trade Vikings fans, via Twitter and Facebook, immediately ran a long list of potential replacements through their heads.  Victor Cruz (tendered with a first rounder), numerous prospects, Greg Jennings, and Mike Wallace are at the forefront of those conversations.

Boldin, once a premier wide out in this league, is on nearing the end of his career and I have to say that I am not too terribly disappointed that this trade didn’t come to fruition.  He might prove me wrong in San Francisco for a year or two, but I just didn’t feel like news of trading for Boldin was the right medicine for just watching Percy Harvin walk out the front door.

  • Where is the talk of Danny Amendola... I would love this guy. Amendola/Wright/Swope(3rd round)/Allen or Patterson(1st round) would be a fun receiving corps next season.

      • Swope is only being called a slot receiver because he is white. I think he would excel as a number 2 wide out. Amendola has also shown he's a reliable number 2 wideout as well, and both would be better than Wright. Add Patterson or Allen and a FA like Ramses Barden to play #1 and were set.

  • Not terribly disappointed myself, Would have been a nice target for ponder...
Guess we'll see their next move soon.

  • That's one of the nice things about getting this trade done on the eve of free agency. Now they can go after a slot receiver if they see fit, but I wouldn't think they would put a lot of money into a guy who is purely a slot like Amendola. They already have Wright for that role, so a guy with some versatility would be a better focus. Jennings can play inside and outside, so I still think they will be in play for him if the price is right. I think they are going to be careful with how they put this receiving group together. Frankly I would go big, give Ponder a large catch radius to work with. One guy that would be real intriguing is the Titans TE Jared Cook, he flexed out wide more than he played in line last year. He's the type of super athletic TE that would compliment Rudolph perfectly. They would need to cut Carlson and right him off as a huge mistake, but it would improve the team. Plus the Bears are supposedly interested in him so you could take the guy away from a division rival.

  • Danny Amendola is just a slot guy. J Wright will do just fine in the slot for the Vikings.
Amendola has some injuries history... His career per catch average is only 8.8 yards.
    No to Amendola and Welker.

I would go after FA WR Brandon Gibson...
    and draft 2 WRs.
