Percy Harvin May Need Surgery

By Brett Anderson

Back in March, the Minnesota Vikings traded versatile wide receiver Percy Harvin to the Seattle Seahawks. At that time, the trade was somewhat polarizing to Vikings fans. Some people thought that Harvin was too much of an offensive weapon to part ways with. Others felt that the compensation was more than enough for a player who has struggled with injuries throughout his career and was not a true number one wide receiver. Only time would tell if Rick Spielman & Co. made the right decision in trading away Harvin.

That time may have come sooner than anyone anticipated.

Originally reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Percy Harvin has a “slight tear” in the labrum, a ring of tissue that lines the outside rim of the hip joint socket. ProFootballTalk later learned that the injury could result in Harvin having to undergo surgery.

Harvin and the Seahawks are going to be seeking a second opinion before deciding to have surgery.

In a press conference Thursday, head coach Pete Carroll told media, “We need to get more information right now. We don’t know enough right now. We will just have to wait and see. The good part is it’s really early. We have a long time to get him ready… We have to be really diligent about the process right now.”

If Percy Harvin does require surgery, the Seahawks shiny new acquisition could be sidelined for quite some time this season, leaving Rick Spielman and Vikings management on top for choosing not to maintain Harvin’s services.

  • Harvin was a tough nut during his time with the Vikings, 'cept for the migraine thingy. Maybe now that he got his big contract he can put it on cruise control. Did he get a lot of guaranteed money?

Jeff Dugan played the entire 2009 season with a deviated sphincter. He never complained. Well, he never complained mostly because he had third degree burns on his tongue from the time when he took Mrs Dugan out on that infamous hot date just before training camp. Little did our favorite hunk of man meat know that Mrs Dugan was experimenting with a Ghost Pepper Cleanse at that time.

The Deviated Sphincter injury? Gotta defer on that one. Adam wants to keep this place PG 13.

    • Ole, I think Harvin has 25.5 guaranteed money over the next 2 years, weather he plays or not.

  • This makes the move to trade Harvin look like a stroke of genius for Spielman. I also see McKinnie came into camp again over weight and he is on the PUP list,

  • I really don't think it has anything to do with him phoning it in after getting paid. I do think it outlines one of the big reason's the Vikes were willing to trade him though. Harvin just kinda does his own thing and communicating problems to the team always seemed secondary to him. Here he shows up to training camp with a frick'n torn labrum that no one seems to know anything about? It will be interesting to see what kind of additional details emerge as far as how the injury happened. He took and passed a physical when he was traded, so this must be something new. Maybe the team new about it and have just kept it under wraps but with Harvin I wouldn't be surprised if he pulled a Rice and just showed up with this injury that he was hoping would magically go away. The trade sure looks pretty good right now.

    • Dan, I read (don not know if it is true) that he got the injury after working out on his own after team OTAs.

  • In other receiver news, Ryan Swope, the Cardinals 6th rounder who a lot of us were hoping the Vikes would take in the draft, is apparently retiring due to concussion issues. At the same time it looks like Mauti has been cleared to practice. Far to early to give Mauti a clean bill of health but the fact that he isn't starting off on the PUP list is enough to give Spielman and our training staff a thumbs up.

  • can't help but smile on this one, but we don't know if it's serious yet, and the minute we gloat about this is the time one of our guys get hurt. stay healthy vikes, and ponder - progress, young man

  • The thing about this is that everyone knows that he is injury prone and damn near made of glass. This news really should not surprise the Sea Chickens. You're right Cal , we really need to hope that the Vikes stay healthy. I will say though, I think they have more depth at more positions than what they have had in years.

  • Im back!

Not sure if this makes me a bad person, but hearing that made me happy. Its not as much percy got hurt but the fact that the player we gave to Seattle is backfiring on them(AGAIN! HA)! Now if only 'Toine retired or something so they dont get him either that'd be justice.

  • Old "part time Percy" at it again.

Dude is a great football player when he actually plays. Loved having him here, but Fred's guy Cheech really has proven he is unable to practice or play a great deal. This is all very troubling.

What really has your old Pal Freds puzzled is the type of injury he is suffering with currently. Perhaps one of you can explain it to your old pal. How in the hell did Percy get an injury that is most often associated with a difficult childbirth? You hear about these "tears" from time to time with women and needing to be sewn up. That makes sense to Freds, but Percy?

    Puzzling.

    • Freds this is the definition from Mayo Clinic. Maybe this will help you out....

      Definition
      By Mayo Clinic staff
      Illustration showing hip joint
      Hip joint
A hip labral tear involves the ring of soft elastic tissue, called the labrum, that follows the outside rim of the socket of your hip joint. The labrum acts like a socket to hold the ball at the top of your thighbone (femur) in place.

Athletes who participate in such sports as ice hockey, soccer, football, golf and ballet are at higher risk of developing a hip labral tear. Structural abnormalities of the hip also can lead to a hip labral tear.

Symptoms include hip pain or a "catching" sensation in your hip joint. Initial treatment may include pain relievers and physical therapy. Using arthroscopic techniques, surgeons can remove loose fragments from within the joint and trim or repair the hip labral tear.

    • maybe bad genetics is the reason why Percy ripped his Mangina, Freds
either that or he was in too big of a rush and did not get properly lubricated before working out

........ and don't tell us this has never happened to you, Freds. I ain't buying that kettle of crawdads

        • Guys my sources tell me that Percy Puff Puff had a little accident while boarding for a boatride on the Lake Minnetonka Express. I heard Freds tripped him on the dock out of spite.Unnamed sources of course.

        • ......... and by "run" you must mean "drove", Freds
was it a car? Or were you motor boating?

The Mangina is right next to the taint. Didn't you learn nuttin' during all those night school anatomy classes you took. You must have had some butt ugly tutors, Freds.

  • Supposedly Greg Childs tweeted he has run a sub 4.40 40 yard dash. I hope this is true. I want him to get back to playing and do well.

    • I would really like to see him get back also. The kid has busted his arse to get back from an injury that this usually a death nail for a football career.

  • Tom Pelissero tweeted this....

    Tom Pelissero @TomPelissero

Reading #Vikings quotes and see Greg Childs is headed for PUP list. Heard he's telling people he ran a sub-4.4 40 recently. One to watch.
