Links Of The Week: One Game Left, But It’s a Big One

By Adam Warwas

Win and in.  Do or Die.  Bliss or Miss.

However you want to put it, this upcoming game against Green Bay is the most important of the 2012 season and the Vikings know it.  There are plenty of storylines to follow here and what better way to get you 100% up to speed than with our weekly links segment.

Here goes:

  • Joe Buck is one step up from the packers.
Not big enough the trip on, I,m for a beatdown.

    • "Not big enough the trip on..."

LOL...Charles, old buddy old pal, I read that like 12 times, and I still can't figure out what that was supposed to mean. What were you trying to say? I'm vastly curious.

  • Walsh walks out on the field, 3 seconds left. He is going to attempt a 70 yard field goal, for the win. It's good!!!! Vikings win.

  • The big issue for Denzel and his veterans will be to keep his youngsters under control. A team can be too amped up for a game like this, rather than extra focused like they need to be. The Vikes don't need guys playing two or three positions, because all that does is create openings for Rodgers to hurt us. If we get in trouble early, it will likely be due to over-the-top emotions, and I could see McCarthy being ready to attack a team all buzzed up like we could be. That's why a demeanor like Leslie's is so important in a game like this.

    • Demeanor? Good gravy man, when you could place a cardboard cutout on the sidelines in his stead, and no one is the wiser, that's not a "deameanor." Though you could technically use the term 'presence.'

Reminds me of a line from Big Legowski: "Nihilists! F*** me. I mean, say what you like about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it's an ethos."

      • To quote a recent blogger's comment... "I read that like 12 times, and I still can’t figure out what that was supposed to mean. What were you trying to say? I’m vastly curious."

        • Let's go for the breakdown. BREAKDOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nihilism (pron.: /ˈnaɪ.ɨlɪzəm/ or /ˈniː.ɨlɪzəm/; from the Latin nihil, nothing) is the philosophical doctrine suggesting the negation of one or more putatively meaningful aspects of life. Most commonly, nihilism is presented in the form of existential nihilism, which argues that life is without objective meaning,

So, what they are saying, is that we may hate the Nazi's, at least they weren't so lazy as to believe in nothing, like the nihilists...at least they had an ethos.

'Ethos (pron.: /ˈiːθɒs/ or /ˈiːθoʊs/) is a Greek word meaning "character" that is used to describe the guiding beliefs or ideals that characterize a community, nation, or ideology.

So, I'm basically saying that bad emotion is better than NO emotion.

          • No, as in most cases, it is blatantly obvious. "Bad emotion better than no emotion"? I'm not sure where that would hold true, but it certainly doesn't in football. (notwithstanding the acknowledgement of varying definitions of "bad".)

      • “Reminds me of a line from Big Legowski: “Nihilists! F*** me. I mean, say what you like about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it’s an ethos.”

And you’re giving Purple Charlie grief for not understanding what he’s saying????
You lost me at “Big Legowski”
Just didn’t tie the sentence together for me, Walter

(yeah, I know, I did it again)

        • ANYBODY who quotes Cyrano de Bergerac on a football website has no ammo to be firing this particular gun....even though you can't figure out the "reply' feature on a fairly basic format.

          • I'm actually with you on that. You quoting it earlier reminded me how good (the first half) of the Jose Ferrer movie was, just ordered the DVD on Amazon last night. Good stuff.

          • Sheez, I haven't seen that movie in years. Thanks for the reminder, I'll netflix it.

        • Cal, it about killed me. I started to think we might act like a team that wouldn't crush me at the least second.

          How naive am I??

          • how'd ya like gray in there with a few minutes to go throwing the ball to...nobody?

            stupid

          • He only overthrew by 15 yards though, right????

Ugh...maybe it's just me, but I'm nervous that the Vikings/Puker game may go the same way.

I hate being on the short end of the stick.

          • that just makes you a well trained vikings fan

i hate being on the short end of the stick, too. that's why i never undress in front of a mirror

    • Yeah, right up until they rip your guts out in the 4th quarter. Texas Techs guys played like a bunch of punks and ended up winning.

      • Dan, that whole negating a Tex TD via fumble review/ejection for punching was so brilliant.

        What a freakin' waste.

        • ...or to be more specific, TD declined, 15 yard penalty/Tex dude ejected...kick good, but false start negated that, then blocked field goal attempt by the Goofers.

I loved that part, but hated the ending.

          • Yeah, that was a great run of events that made me think they could pull out the win. That was the third time I saw a tech player throw a punch, I have no idea why they weren't tossing guys earlier. Too many missed opportunities by QB's and even though the defense played great and had a couple picks, they dropped two others including one that would have iced it with a 7 point lead....but hey, we're not used to QB's missing wide open receivers and DB's dropping picks in Minnesota right? On a side note, I'm really interested to follow Gray this off-season and would like to see him end up in camp with the Vikes. I'm not sure if he'll ultimately be a TE or WR in the NFL, but I think his best football is ahead of him provided he lands with a coach that identifies a position for him and allows him to develope.

Just didn't tie the sentence together for me, Walter

    • Walter was the big fish from On Golden Pond. Cinematic gold, if you ask me. Love that dumb movie.

      • C'mon, Tomb. He wasn't just a "big fish", he was a "son-of-a-fish". Yeah, I like it too.

          • Yeah, remember? The old man, Norman, gets Walter on the line and yells out, "I got you, you son-of-a-fish!" At least that's what it sounded like he said.

  • Yeah, tough loss. So much good football, but enough mistakes at the wrong time to lose the game.

    • Even though I saw it coming, as it was a Minnesota team, I found it a bit crushing, Coach.

May explain my Minnesota sports negativity...seen it so many times.

  • lots of coaching changes coming after tomorrow. musgrave has probably done enough lately to stay in mn, so it'll be quiet on the prairie. not sure if this is a good thing or that he's proven himself yet. at least our coaching staff seems to have improved, now if they can only transfer that to our qb

the anticipation is eating at me. it's great to be in this position after last year. i hope we knock rodgers out

    • Cal, which coachs do you think will get the ax Monday? Rex Ryan has to be on the list and probably Romeo at KC.

      • yeah, i saw a headline that said, like up to ten coaching jobs could be up for grabs and they said seven seemed likely already. norv is out for sure they say around here, lovey dovey might get dear johnned, too, those bastids went what, 7-1 before tanking? it's a pattern with the bears. off the top of my head, reid, whoever's in arizona. there's probably more. did childo ruin anybody's life this year?

    • I agree that the Vikes coaches are safe at this point, but I would still like to see them hire a passing guru to help out with that area. I think a lot of the success in the passing game is due to route combo's and I'm still not sold that Musgrave is strong in that area. Hard to say though, adding a true #1 receiver might make him look like a genious.

      • "a passing guru", i like the sound of that, great idea. WRs are a must have in viking land. the guru thing might be hard to swallow though, kind of like admitting that the guys we have aren't cutting it. maybe the qb coach will take the fall. a lot depends on how ponder plays tomorrow, he could make them all look good, or...not

i really hope mr. steele is turning the corner. i wonder if he has been distracted with the mrs. he tweets biblical quotes a lot, i think, and of course his name is christian, and if he got her pregnant, which i think is why they got married the way they did, he might have felt guilty, so if that pressure is gone in his mind, maybe that will help. sure hope so. now if this were the nba, he wouldn't give a rat's ass

  • Coach, cover your eyes.......................................SHIT!
The game is not on broadcast TV in Anchorage. Lost out to the 'Hawks/Rams game.
Pretty pissed off about that and have a call into the station manager but it looks like I'm headig into town to watch it, so won't be around for the chat. BIG TIME BUMMER.

      • It's a crazy choice of a game. I mean come on, St Loius??!! They haven't had a winning season in 10 years and nothing to play for. By half time, Seattle will have half their starters on the bench.

    • Yeah, we always get stuck with Seattle or SF regional games. Even if they are meaningless . . . Sucks. At least Seattle is worth watching this year.

      • It's all we get up here; Seattle, Seattle, Seattle. I'm SICK of Seattle.
For some reason, our Fox station up here thinks just because of our close proximity to Seattle, we're all Seahawks fans. Couldn't be further from the truth (Actually, a recent poll had Green Bay as the favorite team.) So Fox will be losing thousands of viewers in the Anchorage area, when they turn their TV's off and head to the bars.
Serves them right for being stupid.

    • Aww, SHOOT, Fran, that's a shame. Gosh darn it anyway! Jeepers creepers, what are they thinking? Dipsticks!

    • dude, i didn't even have a chance at getting our game here. this is an afc market, and the only nfc game here will be the early one, eagles at giants, what moron chose that game for san diego??? then, fox has 'just shoot me' and 'bones', and a movie against the chargers game

but i've got it handled, hehe. screw the nfl money machine
