At The Last Minute, Receiver Market Gets Slimmer

By Adam Warwas

News is flying around at the moment, but little is out there directly relating to the Vikings.

Former Vikings such as Randy Moss, Steve Hutchinson, and Ben Leber are all active as free agency nears.  Moss signed a deal that has made him a San Francisco 49er, Hutchinson is visiting the Titans with Peyton Manning, and Leber is possibly going to be an Eagle.

Even though  Moss was never on the Vikings radar, the wide receiver market took a hit on Tuesday and is looking suddenly thin.  Marques Colston reportedly re-signed with the Saints getting him $40 million over five years, with just under $20 million guaranteed.

Rick Spielman appeared on the radio at 1500 ESPN this morning and reiterated that the goal is to get younger.

  • why do i have this feeling that we're going to be disappointed?

    A. because we have so many holes that we can't fill them all in FA
    B. because spielman is unimpressive and has more power now
    C. because i'm a vikings fan and i'm conditioned this way
    D. because i'm scandinavian and depression comes naturally to me

    • Haha, all very viable options I suppose :)

Will be interesting to see how things play out... kind of feels like waiting for paint to dry at the moment, however.

  • I hope we avoid wideouts in FA actually. VJax is already 29 and wants too much money, and after him are a bunch of Bernard Berrian's. If we can take a flyer on a cheaper WR, then maybe, but this isn't nearly as strong of a wideout class as people make it out to be.

    • Laurent Robinson and Josh Morgan are two guys I'd like us to look at if they come on the cheap.

  • I think we'll be diappointed too. Way too many needs and not enough cash but could get a few second tier guys that can help. Shouldnt be too hard to find improvements to what we had last year.

  • All this massive buildup; the tension, the hope, the excitement, the unbridled anticipation...it'll probably be more disappointing than watching the Vikes draft "Big Reach" Ponder last year...or worse yet, watching baseball.

Oh well...less than an hour now, and we can be collectively disappointed by the decent FA's going one by one to other teams. Just the thought of it is giving me gas.

    • Tomb!!! How the hell are ya? I was hoping you didnt jump off a cliff after last year, I'm sure it was tempting.

    • Nahhh...I've just been rehabilitating my torn Viking-fan ligament. Now I'm back in form, ready to have my hopes dashed and dreams smashed, yet again.

  • Tombs, Purple Charlie, Cal, Johnny. . .see, I told you two guys (Adam, Brett) we're still out here, listening.
Yep, I'm also Scandinavian and easily depressed and a Viking fan (I'm sure the depression and being a Viking fan is related, or it could be the lack of light up here in the winter, I don't know)

Good to see a little action around here. I'm heading out in the morning for a trip into Tangle Lakes for a while (I'm riding my backup Polaris, so wish me luck). Hopefully when I return, there'll be quite a bit of excitement around here on our FA signings!

    • Hey Fran good luck with the Polaris. We're pretty much Arctic Cat around here but Polaris is made about 50 miles from me too. I doubt you'll miss much on the FA signings in Viking land. Maybe they'll pass a stadium bill while you are gone tho?
