Low-Profile Vikings Signing Called “Sneaky Good Pick Up”

The Vikings signing didn’t involve a ton of cash. He is, nevertheless, generating a ton of optimism.
Veteran corner James Pierre has agreed to terms with the Minnesota Vikings (the team’s social media even says so). Part of what has made the signing notable is that he has received robust applause. Consider, for instance, the quick quip from Ted Nguyen of The Athletic, who notes, “Sneaky good pick up that will thrive with Flores.”
Vikings Signing Getting a Round of Applause
Do note that the Nguyen comment comes in response to a post from PFF, the analytics website that football fans, players, and coaches like to criticize (but still use). Consider the brief thought that gets shared by the PFF social media post:
“Pierre in 2025:
– 88.9 coverage grade
– 45.7% completion rate allowed
– 28.6% forced incompletion rate”
Some added context allows those numbers to shine a touch brighter. Consider that snagging an 88.9 grade comes within the context of 100 being the maximum. Very few push scores into the 90s. Getting into the high-80s is formidable. Likewise, the completion percentage allowed and forced incompletions are fantastic.

Go ahead and see where Mr. Pierre slides in among the Vikings corners. Some basic details:
- Byron Murphy Jr., CB1: 104 Career Games | 6,474 Snaps
- Isaiah Rodgers, CB2: 77 Career Games | 2,297 Snaps
- James Pierre, CB3: 95 Career Games | 1,309 Snaps
- Zemaiah Vaughn, CB4: 1 Career Game | 0 Snaps
- Dwight McGlothern, CB5: 15 Career Games | 50 Snaps
Taking a quick look at those final two names — Vaughn and McGlothern — helps to clarify the move. At least in part, the Pierre addition is meant to shelter those two unproven young fellas. By no means have the Vikings given up on them. Rather, the Vikings have made a move that’s aimed at giving the youthful UDFAs the needed runway to develop their game.
In fact, Mr. Pierre could end up being a great mentor. After all, he possesses a similar build as a corner who stands at 6’2″ but who is a lean 185 pounds. So, too, did he become a pro after going undrafted.
Furthermore, the Vikings now see themselves in a better spot for the 2026 NFL Draft. In particular, there’s no longer an urgent need for a corner very high. Minnesota could still opt for one if that’s the best course of action, but the James Pierre add is the fire extinguisher for a burning roster need.
He’s coming to the Twin Cities for cheap, as Cameron Wofle reports. Playing for just $8.5 million across two seasons means that there’s ample room to outperform the contract.

The Vikings will need to be savvy in how they approach the other roster needs. Cap space is reasonably scarce, all things considered.
At running back, there’s some indication that a high-end option is desired. A defensive tackle would be nice, there’s merit in adding a linebacker, a WR3/4 would help, and there’s a hole at center.
And, of course, there’s what’s unfolding at quarterback. Rumors abound for what’s going to take place, but reality still needs to arrive. Every indication is that Kyler Murray is the move. Does that become a reality? If so, is there yet another add to be three deep?
Around the internet, other comments about James Pierre praised him as a “steal” and someone whom the Vikings “desperately need.”
