Another Free Agent RB Emerges on Vikings Radar

The Minnesota Vikings have Aaron Jones and Jordan Mason under contract for 2026, but the group may undergo change nevertheless. In the event Jones is cut, for example, Minnesota might need a younger upgrade, from free agency or the draft, and if general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah prefers a veteran, it seems Carolina Panthers tailback Rico Dowdle will be available in eight weeks.
Dowdle’s 2025 tape in Carolina puts him squarely in the “affordable veteran” tier for free agency, which matters if Minnesota wants RB depth this offseason.
Dowdle hinted this week that he has played his last snap in Carolina, trending toward testing the open market.
What Rico Dowdle Could Cost the Vikings
Dowdle will have a market of suitors.

Dowdle Signals an End to His CAR Tenure
Dowdle is scheduled to hit free agency in March, and the Panthers used him in a true-blue running-back-by-committee this season, ceding many of his touches to Chuba Hubbard.
He told ESPN this week about his production if he gets more of a workload, “That definitely is a factor. There’s options for me. I just want to be a guy who can go out there and just get the bulk of the carries. I’ve got more out there that I need to do to improve. And then I’ll celebrate after that.”
Asked about returning to the Panthers, Dowdle opined, “I don’t really know right now. I really don’t have an answer for that question. I just want to see how things go.”
And Panthers head coach Dave Canales said of Dowdle’s impending free agency, “These are all things we’re going to have to talk about over the next couple of days. We have to evaluate all the guys that our contracts are up [with] and see what our next, best move is.”
In NFL speak, this is a long way of saying that Dowdle has likely played his final down in Carolina.
The Production throughout His Career
Dowdle entered the pros as an undrafted free agent in 2020 with the Dallas Cowboys, sticking around that organization in a small role until the end of 2023. The Panthers then pounced in the 2024 offseason, and compared to his Dallas production, Dowdle exploded in Carolina.
These are his numbers since 2020:
2020: 7 Touches | 24 YFS | 0 TDs
2021: Did Not Play
2022: Did Not Play
2023: 106 Touches | 505 YFS | 4 TDs
2024: 274 Touches | 1,328 YFS | 5 TDs
2025: 275 Touches | 1,373 YFS | 7 TDs
*(YFS = Yards from Scrimmage)
Dowdle averages 4.9 yards per touch in his career. It’s also worth noting that he will turn 28 this summer, so 2026 will be go-time if he hopes to snag an RB1 gig from a team. Most running backs begin to decline around age 28 or 29, at least compared to their early and mid-20s.
The Price
The Vikings are over the cap between $30 million and $40 million heading into the offseason. They may not have the funds for another veteran running back. Some claim the team could release the aforementioned Jones, and then Adofo-Mensah would need a replacement, either promoting Mason, signing a player like Dowdle, or drafting a rookie halfback.
If Dowdle piques Minnesota’s interest, he’s likely to cost the Vikings between $6 million and $7 million per year, according to Spotrac. Adofo-Mensah would sign him to a contract in the neighborhood of two years and $15 million.
It’s also unclear whether Minnesota wants another aging runner to replace Jones or would prefer to start fresh with a 21- or 22-year-old from April’s draft, where the Vikings will have about nine picks.
Kansas City Chiefs-themed media believes Dowdle would be a smart fit on Patrick Mahomes’ team.

KC Kingdom’s Efstathios Savvidis wrote this week, “With the Chiefs likely moving on from one or both of Kareem Hunt and Isiah Pacheco, Dowdle would have the perfect opportunity to earn the lead-back role he desperately desires. Dowdle was an instrumental piece in transforming the Panthers into a playoff team, but his workload decreased over the last two months, with the team favoring Chuba Hubbard.”
“Looking at this year’s free agency, there are a few quality running backs, and Dowdle has proven to be one of them. In the last two seasons, he’s displayed the capability of being the primary ball-carrier and is by far a better option than Hunt and Pacheco.”
Kansas City also owns the ninth pick in the draft, which could be absolutely prime territory to pick Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love.
If Not Dowdle, Then Who?
Suppose the Vikings want a veteran running back this offseason — but not Dowdle. The big names in free agency will look like this:
- Breece Hall
- Isiah Pacheco
- Javonte Williams
- JK Dobbins
- Kenneth Walker
- Rachaad White
- Travis Etienne

Or, the draft pool might have these names in the first four rounds:
- Emmett Johnson (Nebraska)
- Jadarian Price (Notre Dame)
- Jeremiyah Love (Notre Dame)
- Jonah Coleman (Washington)
- Kaytron Allen (Penn State)
- Mike Washington (Arkansas)
- Nick Singleton (Penn State)
Dowdle was a college teammate of former Vikings tight end Nick Muse at South Carolina.
