About a week ago, the Minnesota Vikings signed eight of their nine rookies from the 2026 draft class, leaving 2nd-Round linebacker Jake Golday as the last to hop in the pool. On Tuesday, he did precisely that.

Nine rookies are now locked in, and Golday was the last signature.

Golday is now official, and so is the whole Vikings draft class.

Golday Is In

With Golday’s signature, that’s a wrap for rookie signings, as Vikings.com’s Craig Peter wrote Tuesday, “The Vikings have signed their nine-player draft class of 2026. Caleb Banks, Domonique Orange, Caleb Tiernan, Jakobe Thomas, Max Bredeson, Charles Demmings, Demond Claiborne and Gavin Gerhardt were able to finalize their first pro contracts before Friday’s rookie minicamp practice. Second-round pick Jake Golday’s contract was finalized May 19.”

“The signings occurred as this year’s draft picks, undrafted free agents and players invited on a tryout basis are arriving in Minnesota to participate in the team’s rookie minicamp, which will include a practice open to media members on Friday.”

There will be no strange rookie holdouts in Minnesota, as, for example, the Cincinnati Bengals encountered last summer.

His Role

It’s unclear whether Golday will play in Brian Flores’s defense right away; sometimes acclimating to a new defense takes time for rookies. Too, with the Vikings needing more EDGE help, there’s a chance that Golday is deployed as a pass rusher in Flores’s wild scheme.

Most believe Golday will nestle in as a hybrid ILB-OLB when he hits his groove. If he receives snaps on the EDGE as a rookie, Minnesota may not need any more pass-rushing depth behind Andrew Van Ginkel and Dallas Turner.

Otherwise, if Golday is effectively redshirted as a rookie, Minnesota has Blake Cashman, Eric Wilson, and Ivan Pace Jr. for ILB duties.

Golday’s Background

Golday is a 6’4″, 239-pound linebacker and Tennessee native with legitimate athleticism. In college, the 23-year-old showcased versatility by playing both outside and inside linebacker and impressed scouts with his 4.62 speed, strong coverage instincts, and relentless motor. However, his limited experience suggests a considerable learning curve. Several pre-draft evaluations projected him as a better fit for a 4-3 scheme than Flores’ 3-4 defense.

He tallied 163 total tackles in two years at Cincinnati, with 5 sacks and 3 forced fumbles.

The Ringer‘s Todd McShay on Golday: “Golday is a versatile linebacker with powerful hands and excellent speed. He has shorter arms for his frame and he’s on the leaner side, but he has great timing and accuracy in his punch that makes it difficult for blockers to get into his frame. He can stack and shed bigger blockers when he lines up on the edge and beat blockers to the point of attack when he lines up over the slot.”

“He slips blocks with his hands and sifts through traffic between the tackles. He doesn’t have great reaction time, but his height allows him to see into the backfield and he tracks the ball well. He’s a rangy run defender who chases with great effort. He reads the quarterback and closes quickly in coverage.”

McShay considered Golday the third-best ILB in April’s draft.

“He can turn and carry tight ends down the seam and he broke up three passes in 2025. Golday has the traits to develop into a starter early in his career and can be utilized in rush packages and on special teams. He’s not as instinctive or fluid as 2023 first-round pick Jack Campbell, but they have similar frames and posted similar and testing numbers at the combine,” he concluded.

A New Era for Vikings Rookies?

With the whole class signed and delivered for summer operations, Vikings fans now wait for a different outcome than in the years past. When the former boss, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, took over in 2022, he began drafting players with an extraordinarily low success rate, so much so that the lack of talent cost Adofo-Mensah his job.

In short, onlookers grew accustomed to rookies not playing very well or making a long-term impact.

That’s obviously not a sustainable business model, making the Golday selection and eight others from his class more vital to offset the sins of the last four drafts.

Perhaps the days of rookies serving as non-factors are in the rearview.
