Kevin O’Connell May Have Spilled the Beans

The Minnesota Vikings signed Kyler Murray three weeks ago after the Arizona Cardinals soured on him, and since then, some have wondered whether he’s the preordained QB1 or will have to face a true battle with J.J. McCarthy. Well, Murray’s new head coach, Kevin O’Connell, might’ve spilled the beans on Tuesday, talking about Murray as if he were the starter — five months in advance.

Minnesota’s QB picture may be coming into focus faster than expected.

The revelation may not be the almighty smoking gun, but it’s not too far off.

O’Connell’s Comments Point to a QB1 Job for Murray

O’Connell Talks about Murray as Starter

O’Connell spoke on KFAN this week and mentioned his upcoming offense: “I call it the Justin Jefferson program. If they’re playing man coverage, they’re absolutely not playing Justin 1 on 1… what that means if you’re going to try and play those coverages, and have a spy for Kyler Murray, or for that matter any of our other QB’s, you’re leaving yourself a 3 man rush.”

“So, you have to ask yourself, what do you have to take away? If the answer is Justin Jefferson or Jordan Addison, there’s going to be some opportunity.”

Pretty cut and dried, talking about Murray like most coaches speak about their QB1s.

Pretty Weird Stuff to Say about a Backup

There is clear writing on the wall in O’Connell’s comments: he has already planned for Murray as his QB1, laying the framework for how the offense will look in September. Opposing defensive coordinators cannot plan for Jefferson, Addison, and Murray as a scrambler. Something’s gotta give, he says.

Head coaches don’t divulge plans like this for reserve players; did you hear him outline the offense with Max Brosmer on Tuesday? No — because Brosmer is his QB4.

While O’Connell may not have intended to explain in such detail his vision for Murray under center, he did, and he spilled the beans, though the Vikings will still advertise a quarterback competition this summer at training camp. In reality, that faux battle will be Murray’s to lose.

O’Connell also said about Murray, “Watching him play with really good technique and fundamentals, either in the dropback game, the play-action game can be done a lot of different ways. Offset gun, pistol, and under center.”

“He’s pretty dynamic in the keeper game, the movement game obviously, with his natural athleticism. I see a lot of ways that we’ll be able to continue the evolution and evolve our offense here in year five, but at the same time, principles that I believe Kyler will be able to not only make his own, but provide different layers to what we do with some of his experiences.”

The Vikings’ Shot at a Long-Term Franchise Quarterback

At 28 years old, Murray presents a significant opportunity for the Vikings. Should he thrive in Minnesota, he could solidify their quarterback position for the next five to ten years, potentially mirroring Drew Brees transformative impact on the New Orleans Saints after his arrival in 2006.

Murray’s statistical potential is evident. Projected over a full 17-game season, his numbers suggest Pro Bowl caliber: roughly 4,000 passing yards, 30 total touchdowns, and approximately 600 rushing yards. Even considering his history of missed games, his dual-threat capabilities would immediately demand defensive adjustments from opposing teams. Hence O’Connell’s shoutout.

Beyond the statistics, Murray carries the confidence of a former No. 1 overall pick, and with Arizona ready to move on, he will arrive in Minnesota with a point to prove. Quarterbacks with his level of talent and motivation can quickly become a force to be reckoned with.

And that’s where O’Connell’s expertise becomes crucial. Despite recent setbacks to his reputation as a “quarterback whisperer” — McCarthy did not blast off in 2025 — Murray presents an ideal opportunity for revitalization. O’Connell has already demonstrated an ability to elevate quarterbacks such as Sam Darnold, Joshua Dobbs, Kirk Cousins, and Nick Mullens. Pairing O’Connell with a driven and talented quarterback like Murray may yield remarkable results. See: Darnold in 2024.

What about McCarthy?

The downside of Murray? He usually starts about 12-13 games per season. Murray is not the most durable quarterback, missing 24% of career starts since 2019.

In all likelihood, Murray probably will get nicked in 2026, paving the way for McCarthy’s insertion into the lineup. It will be up to McCarthy to show off his development and maturation, and if he plays his cards right, there’s a world where he never gives the job back. Murray’s one-year deal is so affordable that if McCarthy retakes the QB1 job, it won’t be a miscarriage of financial justice for Murray to stay on the sideline.

McCarthy is just 23 years old. He continues to have youth on his side, and his main competitor for the QB1 post has documented injury history. McCarthy may not start Week 1, but he could be the starter sometime in October or November, for example.

In the meantime, O’Connell has already laid out the offensive nuts and bolts with Murray at the helm — a tell-tale sign.
