Bizarre Jonathan Greenard Trade Idea Makes the Rounds

The Minnesota Vikings may or may not trade Jonathan Greenard in the near future, and according to Mike Kaye from the Charlotte Observer, a 5th-Round pick might get the deal done.
The idea sounds flimsy, though two teams do bring obvious dots to connect.
It’s a laugher of an idea, but it’s out in the open now, as the Vikings form their roster for 2026 through free agency this week.
The First Terrible Greenard Trade Take Is Here
Close your eyes; it’s a bad Greenard trade take.

Kaye: How about Greenard for a 5th-Rounder?
The Carolina Panthers hosed the Vikings last year in a trade, prying a 4th-Rounder loose from Minnesota for Adam Thielen, in addition to a couple of other late-round draft moving pieces between the clubs.
So, Carolina should turn around and pay Minnesota back a 5th-Rounder — for Greenard. Kaye tweeted Monday, “The Panthers have added two former Vikings pass rushers in back-to-back years. Greenard would be a considerable upgrade, even coming off a down year.”
“Kaye’s Take: What about offering the Vikings their fifth rounder back for Greenard (he’s going to want a new deal, and this will save Minnesota quite a bit of cap space)? Not sure that gets it done but would be pretty funny.”
Twitter (X) users were quick to notify Kaye about the lunacy of his proposal.
Pure Absurdity
The Vikings — if they trade Greenard at all — are reportedly seeking a 2nd- or 3rd-Round pick for him, which would represent fair market value after the Baltimore Ravens just landed Maxx Crosby for two 1st-Rounders. Greenard will turn 29 in May, and he isn’t quite as productive as Crosby. Still, a single 5th-Rounder for Greenard is utterly ludicrous.

The swap would be markedly worse than the Thielen trade — and that was bad-bad in retrospect.
It’s actually more realistic for the Vikings to extract the 31st overall pick from the New England Patriots — a team that might need EDGE help — than accepting a 5th-Rounder for Greenard, who reached the Pro Bowl as recently as 2024.
A Realistic Greenard-to-CAR Proposal
Take Kaye’s zany idea and place it in the trash. Here’s what a real Greenard to Carolina trade might look like:
Vikings Get: 51st Overall (R2)
Panthers Get: Jonathan Greenard | 6th-Rounder
— or —
Vikings Get: 83rd Overall Pick (R3) | 119th Pick (R4)
Panthers Get: Jonathan Greenard | 7th-Rounder
It’s also worth noting that the Panthers landed Philadelphia Eagles EDE Jaelan Phillips on Monday morning. NFL insider Jordan Schultz tweeted, “BREAKING: The Panthers are signing standout pass-rusher Jaelan Phillips to a 4-year, $120M deal, per sources.”
The Panthers’ need for a pass rusher might be vanquished, eliminating them from the theoretical Greenard trade sweepstakes.
Commanders, 49ers Could Make Real Sense for Trade
The Washington Commanders seem a strong contender for Greenard. Dylan Thompson, who observed Greenard’s growth as the Houston Texans’ director of team development from 2021 to 2023, is now the Commanders’ senior director of team support and advancement. The connection would give Washington an EDGE, as Thompson can offer valuable insights into Greenard’s toolkit.
Moreover, Washington’s new defensive coordinator, Daronte Jones, recently coached Minnesota’s defensive backs. This existing player-coach relationship could also influence the team’s pursuit of Greenard, particularly given the Commanders’ need for EDGE rushers.
The Commanders’ current group is among the league’s thinnest, and with over $70 million in cap space, Washington has the financial resources to acquire a proven pass rusher like Greenard.

NFL writer Evan Massey noted this week, “Depending on what Minnesota’s asking price for him ends up being, trading for Greenard could make a lot of sense for Washington. At the very least, he’s a name worth monitoring as a potential option for the Commanders.”
“Expect to hear a lot of rumors swirling around in Washington. The Commanders know that they were close to a championship in 2024 and they’re going to try to do whatever it takes this offseason to get back to that level in 2026.”
San Francisco is another potential destination. Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, the former Vikings general manager, recently joined the San Francisco 49ers as a personnel executive. His familiarity with Greenard adds legitimacy. Adofo-Mensah signed Greenard for the Vikings in 2024 from free agency.
Although the 49ers’ EDGE depth chart includes Nick Bosa, Mykel Williams, and Bryce Huff, injuries have affected the group’s consistency. Greenard would provide stability and reliable production to their rotation. General manager John Lynch could even explore a trade package involving quarterback Mac Jones, potentially sending him to Minnesota in exchange for Greenard and additional assets.
If Greenard is indeed traded, the deal will likely materialize early this week for cap reasons.
