Former Viking with a Cult Following Lands a New Gig

Former Vikings running back Cam Akers rides again.
The playmaker has thrice been employed in Minnesota. In fact, Mr. Akers did work for the Vikings in 2025, filling in some snaps at running back as Minnesota sorted through injury to Aaron Jones. He then journeyed over to Seattle, earning some money, playing a modest role, and then getting another Super Bowl ring on his finger. He just landed his next contract.
Former Viking Cam Akers Rolling with the Seahawks
Adam Shefter of ESPN came through with the update.
Consider the word: “Seahawks signed 15 players to future contracts on Thursday, including veteran running backs Velus Jones Jr. and Cam Akers, both of whom played in Seattleโs Super Bowl LX win over the Patriots.”

Right now, the Seahawks are looking pretty sharp, aren’t they?
Some tremendous drafting over these past years has paid off. Moving on from Geno Smith (recently linked to the Vikings) in favor of Sam Darnold (should be a Viking) now looks like a stroke of genius even as there may have been some skepticism at the time of the decision last March. Plus, Mike Macdonald has proven to be a great head coach and sophisticated defensive mind.
By adding Mr. Akers, the Seahawks give their running back position a low-level boost that could pay off. They’ve certainly earned the benefit of the doubt.
Akers is a veteran who has been through much in his career. Getting drafted at No. 52 in the 2019 NFL Draft, Akers began his career with the Rams. He won a Super Bowl for his troubles before falling out of favor with Sean McVay.
The runner got traded to the Vikings in 2023. Before long, Akers became a Texan. The Vikings again traded for him, adding Akers to the roster in 2024. Next up was a chance with the Saints. When that opportunity closed, Akers signed with the Vikings. Not too often, folks, does a running back get grafted onto the same roster for three straight seasons through a trade, another trade, and then a free agency signing.

Boiled down to a single play, the highlight of Akers’ most recent season was his touchdown pass to Josh Oliver. In that moment, the appeal of Akers become evident: the 26-year-old runner can do a variety of things well.
Neither injury nor lack of permanent address in the NFL have been able to slow down Mr. Akers. Give him a pile of credit for continuing to hustle and grind, carving out a career for himself that has covered five NFL teams and has involved earning a pair of Super Bowl rings (with opportunity to add more to his collection).
Meanwhile, the Vikings are sorting through their own running back questions.
Veteran Aaron Jones is coming off an injury-shortened season where he was relatively inefficient. He looks like a cut candidate. Keeping him may require a contract adjustment while then pushing him toward being a high-end 3rd-down back.
Next up is Jordan Mason, a rugged runner who plays the role of hammer while defenders get put in the role of being the nail. He could end up being the RB1 in 2026. Mason has more wiggle and athleticism than he’s given credit for even if his main strength is his strength.

For a little while, Vikings fans were dreaming of adding ultra talented runner Jeremiyah Love in the 2026 NFL Draft. The hope isn’t entirely extinguished but it’s not burning bright since Minnesota is down at No. 18. In all likelihood, the Notre Dame runner is going to get scooped up before the Vikings step up.
Depending on how things go in the coming months, Cam Akers could become a Viking yet again. If so, the former Viking will see his cult following grow.
