Bills Snatch Former Vikings WR

Trent Sherfield stopped by the Buffalo Bills organization in 2023 — and he’s on his way back three years later, landing with Joe Brady’s team in the second wave of free agency.
Sherfield gives Buffalo another trusted veteran for the bottom of the receiver room.
The Bills have experienced a bumpy ride in nailing down the WR corps, and Sherfield is back, presumably for his special teams prowess.
Bills Add More Experience to WR Corps
Buffalo rolls with depth in late March.

Sherfield to BUF
The draft is less than four weeks away, and the Bills opted for another Sherfield run.
The Democrat and Chronicle‘s Sal Maiorana wrote Thursday, “The Buffalo Bills are putting the money they saved when Ryan Van Demark bolted to Minnesota to use as they announced on Thursday the signings of offensive linemen Austin Corbett and Lloyd Cushenberry III, and wide receiver Trent Sherfield.”
“Sherfield returns to Buffalo after spending 2023 with the team. That year, the well-traveled 30-year-old played 17 games but caught only 11 passes on 22 targets for 86 yards and a touchdown. His role was largely as a blocker, and with Tyrell Shavers likely missing a big chunk of the season, Sherfield will compete to be his replacement as the fifth receiver and core special teamer. When he was with the Bills, Sherfield played 150 snaps on special teams.”
Sherfield reached the Super Bowl with the New England Patriots last month before losing to the Seattle Seahawks.
The New BUF WR Corps
Buffalo has cast a wide net this offseason at wide receiver, mainly trading for DJ Moore with the Chicago Bears. Adding Sherfield to the mix brings the group to this:
- DJ Moore
- Khalil Shakir
- Keon Coleman
- Joshua Palmer
- Mecole Hardman Jr.
- Tyrell Shavers
- Jalen Virgil
- Stephen Gosnell
- Trent Sherfield
The Bills have taken heat as of late for failing to nail down a clear-cut WR1 since Stefon Diggs’s departure after the 2023 campaign. They’ll hope Moore fills those shoes in 2026.
SI.com‘s Alex Brasky on the Sherfield move: “He has likely been brought back to be a contributor on special teams while also providing veteran depth at wide receiver. Sherfield is a strong run blocker, so perhaps the Bills can get some utility out of that phase of his skill set. This might be it for the Bills in terms of free-agent wide receiver additions.”
“But by no means should Sherfield preclude them from selecting a top-level talent at the position in the upcoming NFL Draft. Sherfield doesn’t move the needle, but he is a nice signing nonetheless. With that said, Buffalo should remain in hot pursuit of a more meaningful addition to its group of offensive weapons. Beginning with its pick at No. 26 in the first round.”
Sherfield’s Career Bio
Sherfield’s 2024 box score in Minnesota — eight catches for 83 yards and a touchdown — didn’t reflect his true impact, which was most apparent in the margins.

This was also true in 2025 with Denver, before his midseason release. Under Kevin O’Connell, Sherfield carved out a role as a core special teams player, logging 221 snaps and handling the thankless reps that drive field position. While serving as a WR5 on offense, he brought needed energy to both kick and punt units on special teams. He later did the same with the Broncos after departing the Vikings. The outlook probably awaits him in Buffalo, too.
All of Sherfield’s stops to date:
- Arizona Cardinals (2018–2020)
- San Francisco 49ers (2021)
- Miami Dolphins (2022)
- Buffalo Bills (2023)
- Minnesota Vikings (2024)
- Denver Broncos (2025)
- Arizona Cardinals (2025)
- New England Patriots (2025)
- Buffalo Bills (2026)
Sherfield has appeared in 124 games in 8 seasons, banking 89 catches for 1034 yards and 6 touchdowns. He averages about 8 receiving yards per game and very vividly has shown NFL staying power for his special teams prowess.
