Jonathan Greenard Might Need a Reality Check

This offseason, the Minnesota Vikings will need to make plenty of moves to get cap compliant and improve the team moving forward.

Kwesi Adofo-Mensah continued to miss on draft picks and pushed money into the future. It leaves Rob Brzezinski in an unenviable position, but one he hasn’t dealt with before.

Greenard’s Worth and What Minnesota Can Pay

Aaron Jones and Javon Hargrave had already been notified that they will be cap casualties. Others, such as Jonathan Allen, could take place as well. That’s not the case with Jonathan Greenard, but he is currently exhibiting signs of delusion.

When the Minnesota Vikings opted not to pay Danielle Hunter, they looked to his landing spot in Houston. Jonathan Greenard was a free agent, and they scooped him up on a four-year deal worth $76 million.

Named to his first Pro Bowl and earning Defensive Player of the Year honors a season ago, Greenard racked up 12 sacks in 17 games. Then he came back for 2025 and was hurt, played in just 12 games, and finished with just three sacks. There’s no denying that Greenard is a great player. Asking for a raise after your worst season as a professional is certainly an aloof choice, though.

It makes sense that the Vikings may want to explore trading Greenard. Dallas Turner really shouldn’t go into year three as a backup, and while there are still questions, he recorded eight sacks while earning just ten starts last season. He looks ready for a serious breakout in Brian Flores defense, and he’s a youth reset at a critical position.

There should be a level of worry surrounding depth after Andrew Van Ginkel missed time due to a neck injury. That said, dumping Greenard’s cap hit for a second-round pick, or something equivalent, would hardly be a bad reason to plug Turner into the lineup full-time.

Greenard could have been a big piece in getting a big fish. His posturing for a payday while not reading the room may make him expendable before that silliness translates to on-field production.
