One Vikings Player Is Winning the Offseason

The Minnesota Vikings have not done much via trade or free agency this offseason — aside from stealing Kyler Murray from the Arizona Cardinals — but because of a key departure, the clear winner so far, at least from a late-March perspective, is wide receiver Tai Felton.

Roster movement and Addison uncertainty have opened a path for Felton to climb quickly.

A path has been totally cleared for Felton to earn a WR3 job this year after barely playing on offense as a rookie in 2025, despite 3rd-Round draft stock.

Felton Has a Real Opening in Minnesota’s Receiver Rotation

Jalen Nailor Gone

Two weeks ago, Minnesota’s WR3 from the last two seasons skeddaled in free agency.

Sporting News Mike Moraitis wrote, “The Las Vegas Raiders have added to their wide receivers room. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Raiders are signing former Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Jalen Nailor to a three-year, $35 million deal. Nailor’s contract with the Raiders includes $24 million guaranteed.”

“A former sixth-round pick of the Vikings, Nailor has broken the 400-yard mark in each of the past two seasons. While not great, it’s fair to point out that he was in a crowded wide receivers room behind Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison. The feeling in league circles is Nailor is much better than his production would indicate and his best days are ahead of him if he can get more looks.”

Beyond the shadow of a doubt, Nailor filled the WR3 role in 2025, forging immediate chemistry with first-year starter J.J. McCarthy. But that relationship alone wasn’t enough for a second act in the Twin Cities, and the Raiders handed Nailor the bag.

Outwardly, the seas parted for Felton to sniff the WR3 job.

No FA WR Signings

After that, the Vikings signed exactly zero free-agent replacements for Nailor. They’ve had ample opportunities, as players like Hollywood Brown, Kendrick Bourne, Romeo Doubs, Mike Evans, and Christian Kirk have waltzed to new teams.

Minnesota has fancied none.

Instead, if Felton isn’t on track to grab the WR3 title, the free-agent list is down to these men:

  • Keenan Allen
  • Stefon Diggs
  • Tyreek Hill
  • DeAndre Hopkins
  • Deebo Samuel

Not for nothing, the Vikings probably would’ve signed a WR3 by now if they didn’t love Felton or didn’t have a WR plan for the draft.

Hopkins, a former teammate of Murray in Arizona, said last week that he’d love to join the Vikings. SI.com‘s Joe Nelson on Hopkins to Minnesota: “He’s no longer in his prime like he was then with Arizona, but his status as a still very good red zone threat might make a lot of sense with the Vikings, who lack experience and depth behind Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison in the receiver room.”

“Minnesota has good people, and the roster might be capable of pushing the envelope and competing for a spot in the Super Bowl next season. The biggest reason for that is Murray, who should give the Vikings a serious upgrade at the most important position in the game following Minnesota’s QB disaster last season when J.J. McCarthy, Carson Wentz, and Max Brosmer struggled with injuries and inaccuracy.”

Jordan Addison’s Sketchy Outlook

The Vikings are likely to exercise Addison’s fifth-year option by May 1st, a decision complicated by growing off-field concerns. While his talent remains undeniable, a pattern of incidents is becoming a significant factor in his evaluation.

In 2023, Addison was stopped for driving 140 mph in a 55 mph zone near Minneapolis, initially claiming a dog emergency. Although that incident quickly faded from public attention, a year later, he was found asleep and intoxicated on a Los Angeles freeway, resulting in a three-game suspension after legal proceedings.

This pattern continued into 2025, as Addison missed a team walkthrough in London, leading head coach Kevin O’Connell to bench him for a quarter that week in a win over the Cleveland Browns. Furthermore, a trespassing arrest at a Florida casino in January 2026, though ultimately dismissed, contributes to the overall narrative.

These accumulating incidents impact Addison’s leaguewide value. Any team considering acquiring him now faces a clear record of these issues. With behavior that volatile, the man after Addison on the depth must be ready to go at a moment’s notice, and right now, that guy is Felton.

Felton as the Last Man Standing

As “the guy” at WR3 in March, Felton may have already outlasted two outcomes: Nailor re-signing with the club versus leaving in free agency, and the Vikings signing a free-agent wideout.

Next, he must survive the draft. Minnesota could realistically pick one of these receivers before the end of Round 3:

  • Makai Lemon (USC)
  • Jordyn Tyson (Arizona State)
  • Omar Cooper Jr. (Indiana)
  • Denzel Boston (Washington)
  • Kevin Concepcion (Texas A&M)
  • Chris Brazzell (Tennessee)
  • Chris Bell (Louisville)
  • Germie Bernard (Alabama)
  • Zachariah Branch (Georgia)
  • Malachi Fields (Notre Dame)
  • Antonio Williams (Clemson)
  • Elijah Sarratt (Indiana)
  • Skyler Bell (UConn)
  • Bryce Lance (North Dakota State)
  • Ted Hurst (Georgia State)

If none of those men hear their name called at the podium on behalf of the Vikings, it’s Felton as the WR3 in 2026. He’s in the pole position 30 days before the draft.
