The Philadelphia Eagles bruised and battered the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl last month, and Kansas City has already begun the process of repair, with hopes of returning to its dynastic form.
Former Viking Re-Signs with Chiefs
So, this week, to shore up linebacker depth, the Chiefs re-signed former Minnesota Vikings linebacker Blake Lynch.
Arrowhead Pride‘s Pete Sweeney wrote, “According to the NFL’s official transactions report, the Kansas City Chiefs have re-signed linebacker Blake Lynch. Lynch, 28, first entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Baylor following the 2020 NFL Draft.”
“The 6-foot-3, 225-pound linebacker had stops with the Minnesota Vikings, Arizona Cardinals, Los Angeles Chargers, Seattle Seahawks and Las Vegas Raiders before signing with the Chiefs’ practice squad in late December.”
Lynch played in one Chiefs game last season, tallying 25 defensive snaps and 22 on special teams. He also worked for the Los Angeles Chargers and Las Vegas Raiders before signing in Kansas City, an AFC West trifecta.
Here’s Lynch’s journeyman resume to date:
- Minnesota Vikings (2020–2021)
- Arizona Cardinals (2022–2023)
- Los Angeles Chargers (2023)
- Seattle Seahawks (2024)
- Los Angeles Chargers (2024)
- Las Vegas Raiders (2024)
- Kansas City Chiefs (2024–present)
The Vikings found Lynch as an undrafted free agent before the pandemic season in 2020, and he stayed on the roster for a smidgen over two seasons (if one counts the 2022 preseason). In total, Lynch played 20 games for the Vikings while starting seven.
He’s notched 57 total tackles, three passes defended, two sacks, two tackles for loss, and a QB hit since 2020.
The Baylor alumnus was on the Vikings’ roster bubble in 2022 but fell short to rookies Brian Asamoah and Troy Dye. Lynch could’ve joined Minnesota’s 2022 practice squad, in theory, but the Vikings chose rookie linebacker William Kwenkeu instead.
These are the Chiefs’ off-ball linebackers at the moment, with Lynch back in the mix:
- Drue Tranquill
- Leo Chenal
- Jack Cochrane
- Shaun Bradley
- Blake Lynch
Kansas City made headlines last week by franchise-tagging Pro Bowl offensive guard Trey Smith, considered by many the very best free-agent target in 2025. But Smith won’t depart the franchise unless a trade materializes. Coincidentally, Smith was the dream target of Vikings fans in free agency until the Chiefs slapped the tag on him.
Lynch turned 28 last month and will vie for a 53-man roster spot this summer.
