Vikings Rumors Simmer over Asante Samuel Jr., K.J. Osborn, and Romeo Doubs

The second batch of Minnesota Vikings-themed rumors has arrived for the week.
Vikings rumors simmer with talk around Asante Samuel Jr., K.J. Osborn, and Romeo Doubs as Minnesota ponders potential moves before the 2025 season.
Kevin O’Connell’s team nears the start of the regular season, fresh off this week’s roster cuts and with the preseason in the books.
Here are the latest Vikings rumors.

The purple rumor mill involving Asante Samuel Jr., K.J. Osborn, and Romeo Doubs.

Rumor: The Vikings haven’t done much at cornerback this summer, leading many to believe they’re waiting to sign Asante Samuel Jr. midseason.
Teams, including the Vikings, should get a crack at Samuel Jr. sometime in the middle of the season.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler tweeted Tuesday, “An update on Asante Samuel: He’s scheduled to undergo a CT scan in October to ensure successful spinal fusion. At that point, he will look to sign with a team for the second half of the year. Several teams have kept in touch.”
Samuel Jr. has been associated with Minnesota’s rumor mill since April. Perhaps general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah will sign the promising corner in the next couple of months.

SI.com‘s Jackson Bakich wrote about Samuel Jr.: “Earlier this year, the former Seminole was floated to the Miami Dolphins as a potential replacement for another former Seminole, Jalen Ramsey, who was recently traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers.”
“But with Fowler’s recent update, it would not be surprising if teams in need of a CB wait to pull the trigger on Samuel Jr.’s until his bill of health is clean, and they evaluate their needs in the secondary when the time comes.”
Rumor: The Washington Commanders dropped K.J. Osborn, making him a free-agent candidate for Minnesota.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted this week: “Commanders are releasing veteran WR KJ Osborn, who now becomes a free agent.”
Star Tribune’s Ben Goessling added, “If the Vikings are looking for a plug-and-play option at receiver who’d come cheaper than Adam Thielen would in a trade, Osborn could be a fit.”
The aforementioned Fowler, too: “Could be option for Minnesota, which is looking for WR help. Went for 48-540-3 in Kevin O’Connell’s offense in 2023.”

Minnesota later traded for Adam Thielen, perhaps cancelling the would-be Osborn interest. But at the time of this article’s publication, Osborn remains a free agent. If an injury prevented Jalen Nailor, for example, from seeing the Vikings’ lineup, Osborn might be a common-sense solution.
Rumor: Romeo Doubs would be a nice addition to the purple roster if NFC North trades weren’t taboo.
Packer rookie wideout Matthew Golden might’ve made Romeo Doubs expendable.
Lombardi Ave’s Mike Lombardo explained a couple of weeks ago, “The Green Bay Packers’ wide receiver room has become the subject of much consternation in the last few months, as the selection of Matthew Golden in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft could be a sign that one of the holdovers from years gone by may end up getting traded away.”
“Romeo Doubs has stood out as perhaps the most likely trade candidate, thanks to the combination of his past performance and the faint likelihood of the possibility that Green Bay is going to hand him a long-term contract at the end of the season.”

Before adding Adam Thielen via trade, Doubs might’ve made sense for Minnesota.
“Doubs’ trade market likely remains healthy across the NFL, as his consistency and penchant for pulling off tough catches will make him desirable for any team in need of some juice on the outside. Brian Gutekunst may find a trade partner in a team that has been burned by former Packers before,” Lombardo added.
Minnesota and Green Bay rarely engage in trade business, but some have wondered what Doubs might look like in purple if the two parties set aside longstanding intradivisional trading taboos.
But because Thielen is now in the house, Minnesota is unlikely to spend another mid-round draft pick via trade to obtain a wide receiver.
