It’s the second batch of Minnesota Vikings rumors of the week, this time involving Kirk Cousins, a possible new team for Andrew Booth, and Max Brosmer’s role in the quarterback room.

The Vikings rumor mill is buzzing with talk on Kirk Cousins, Andrew Booth, and Max Brosmer as Minnesota sorts through storylines in 2025.

Minnesota has a 1-1 record entering Week 3, not playing well so far in 2025, but orchestrating a 4th Quarter comeback in Week 1 that might’ve saved the season in hindsight.

Here’s a peek at Sunday’s rumors.

Vikings Rumors | September 21, 2025

The purple rumor mill is here for Week 3.

Rumor: With J.J. McCarthy hurt, some believe a logical trade destination for Kirk Cousins is … the Vikings.

Cousins never strays too far from the purple rumor mill. Let’s get that out of the way.

So when J.J. McCarthy sprained his ankle this week, Cousins’ name popped right back up. Former Eagles President Joe Banner headlined the group by tweeting: “Last week I said McCarthy is a long way from being a quality NFL QB. X attacked and ridiculed me after he had a come from behind win against a bad D. I still think the Vikings should call Atlanta about Kirk Cousins. McCarthy may be the answer someday, but it’s not now.”

Writer Chase Irle also mentioned Cousins to Minnesota this week: “The Vikings let Sam Darnold walk in the offseason due to their belief in J.J. McCarthy. Through two weeks, there have been some flashes, but it’s been mostly bad quarterback play in Minnesota, especially against the Falcons on Sunday Night Football. On top of that, McCarthy is now dealing with an ankle injury that is expected to sideline him for the next 2-4 weeks.”

“If Minnesota still believes McCarthy is the future, they may simply ride out the storm. But if there are doubts, a reunion with Cousins could make perfect sense. He knows Kevin O’Connell’s system inside and out, and Minnesota’s roster is too talented to waste a season waiting for McCarthy to develop into something he’s not ready to be right now.”

Cousins has a cap hit of $57.5 million in 2026 and $57.5 million in 2027. In addition to the idea of Minnesota looking backward per long-term thinking by trading for Cousins, adding any player with that cap hit for patchover duty probably isn’t worthwhile.

The man will become a hot commodity in the NFL trade rumor mill next month, but don’t expect Minnesota to be a key player.

Rumor: Andrew Booth is unemployed and could soon join the injury-ravaged Arizona Cardinals secondary.

An old pal of the Vikings, cornerback Andrew Booth, worked out for the Cardinals this week.

SI.com’s Donnie Druin wrote, “The Arizona Cardinals worked out the following four players on Tuesday after their Week 2 win against the Carolina Panthers: CB Andrew Booth, CB Shemar Bartholomew, CB Ekow Boye-Doe, DL Zach Carter.”

“The workouts come as a result of the Cardinals losing their three starting cornerbacks in Garrett Williams, Will Johnson, and Max Melton during Sunday’s win.”

Here’s the CB situation at the moment for Jonathan Gannon’s team:

  • Sean Murphy-Bunting (Injured)
  • Garrett Williams (Injured)
  • Will Johnson
  • Max Melton (Injured)
  • Starling Thomas V (Injured)
  • Jalen Thompson
  • Elijah Jones
  • Denzel Burke
  • Kei’Trel Clark
  • Chigozie Anusiem (Practice Squad)
  • Ekow Boye-Doe (Practice Squad)

Minnesota drafted Booth in Round 2 three years ago, but he never took off, and general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah traded him in the summer of 2024 to the Dallas Cowboys.

Now, he’s turned into the type of player who auditions for practice squads.

Rumor: Max Bromser is the QB2 in Minnesota until further notice.

The Vikings signed Desmond Ridder this week for depth after J.J. McCarthy sprained his ankle in Week 2. Carson Wentz will start until further notice, but if something happens to Wentz, Max Brosmer would be the next man up.

“The way Max has been preparing, being two snaps away, will probably only be enhanced. There’s probably not much more room he can grow from a preparation standpoint, other than the physical reps that would come with it,” Kevin O’Connell said to the media this week.

And O’Connell on Ridder: “With the rules being what they are with the emergency third quarterback, we wanted to have one. Based upon the early aspect of our season, we’re pretty deep into some position groupings as it is. We wanted to make sure we could get a guy that’s played before.”

“Desmond had a great workout. … If we get to that scenario, we felt like it would be good to have a veteran guy that’s still young and growing as a player, but can step in and execute if called upon.”

So, Brosmer, not Ridder, is the QB2 against the Bengals.
