The Minnesota Vikings’ schedule will be released on May 14th, and onlookers will learn the timing of each game.

The opponents are already known, so May 14 is the about the when. Some, too, are excited to see if Minnesota plays overseas, as rumors suggest the purple team could take on the Pittsburgh Steelers in Dublin, Ireland.

And according to NFL.com, one Vikings tilt is must-see television — a Top 10 game of the year — Minnesota at Seattle in 2025.

At No. 9 on the NFL.com’s pecking order, Kevin Patra wrote, “This will be in plenty of ‘revenge game’ columns this offseason, which adds to the anticipation as Sam Darnold takes on his former team in Seattle. On their own, both of these clubs bring intriguing questions to the 2025 campaign. Can J.J. McCarthy seamlessly take over a well-oiled Kevin O’Connell offense and keep it running smoothly?”

“Was O’Connell’s scheme the reason for Darnold’s success, or has he finally turned the corner from his ghost-seeing days? Will the Seahawks’ revamped offense under Klint Kubiak shine or take time to jell? What role will Jalen Milroe play? Two clubs that have high-variance outcomes make for an intriguing matchup.”

The Kansas City Chiefs against the Buffalo Bills headlined Patra’s list.

J.J. McCarthy vs. Sam Darnold

While Patra aptly explained the matchup, the real story will be McCarthy versus Darnold, two former teammates, friends, and now rivals.

Darnold bolted for the Seahawks in March, landing a fat contract worth $100.5 million over three years. Minnesota allegedly wanted him back, but his price point didn’t jibe with 2025 roster construction. So, after surviving Aaron Rodgers rumors a month ago, McCarthy is in line to seize his rightful QB1 job.

At some point on the calendar, he and Darnold will have a battle in Seattle.

Darnold on the Job in Seattle

Darnold said in March about becoming a Seahawk: “First and foremost, I’m excited to be here. Excited to get to know this organization … Excited to meet my teammates. I’ve met a couple of the new ones already. You know, D-Law (DeMarcus Lawrence), Josh (Jones), just very, very excited to get to meet everyone. And just about this organization. I’ve heard so many good things about this organization from different guys that have played here, retired, and still playing in the league.”

“You hear nothing but great things about this organization, and man, I’m just so excited to be a part of it. Excited to meet some of the fans, the 12s. Playing here, I think I’ve played here a total of three times, actually played twice. I was a backup in San Francisco working with Klint (Kubiak) here, one of those times, and it’s an unbelievable atmosphere at Lumen Field.”

Darnold delivered 4,319 passing yards and 36 total touchdowns in Minnesota last season before flopping in the season’s final two games.

Darnold added, “I’m so excited to finally have those 12s on my side this time. And yeah, man, just really looking forward to this opportunity to be here with my teammates, with these coaches. I think we have an opportunity to do something very, very special here. But it’s going to take a lot of hard work, and we know that. I know that going in. And yeah, just very excited to take this one day at a time, and that’s what I’m going to do.”

Seahawks HC Mike Macdonald on Darnold

Seattle’s skipper, too, is excited to have Darnold in town. He said after free agency: “He’s just a tremendous human being. A great leader. We have a lot of people in our building that have a history with Sam that have a lot of respect for him as a person, as a leader, as a football player. I’m really excited to get our relationship started and getting to introduce himself to the rest of the team and the city and the 12s. I think we are going to be really proud of our quarterback here.”

“Then, obviously, as a football player and a quarterback, just a heck of a player. Just tough as nails from my opinion. You go through all the talent. We can talk about that until we are blue in the face. But just really excited about what Sam is going to bring to our football team and just an exciting time.”

Last Year’s Thriller

Vikings at Seahawks will actually be a rematch of a 2024 thriller. Darnold, now employed by Seattle, helped dagger the Seahawks last December, one of Minnesota’s final prosperous moments in 2024.

He connected with Justin Jefferson late in the 4th Quarter, and Minnesota prevailed 27-24.

Seattle would’ve reached the postseason had it toppled Minnesota that afternoon, based on how standings played out.
