Vikings Again Linked to the Almighty Prize

A couple of weeks ago, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback sat in front of reporters, telling them about his state of unhappiness with football and life. Naturally, NFL media ran with his melancholy, wondering if the man might retire like Andrew Luck or request a trade. The Minnesota Vikings initially made short lists and topped theoretical betting odds as a Burrow trade destination, and that speculation has not died down.

Cincinnati can flirt with a reset and still keep its quarterback, which is why the Vikings angle keeps running into the same wall: leverage, cost, and a Bengals team that won’t donate relevance.

CBS Sports connected Burrow to the Vikings last week, the latest mention of the theory that would change Vikings history.

Joe Burrow Rumor Mill Persists for Vikings

Burrow to Minnesota is a real thing inside the rumor mill.

CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones on Burrow’s Would-Be Destinations

While it remains to be seen if the Bengals would actually trade Burrow, the rumor mill isn’t skittish about advancing the idea.

Jones wrote over the weekend, “Elite quarterbacks staying in just one place is more rare than one would think. Troy Aikman is the last Hall of Fame quarterback to have played for just one team, and he was inducted into the Hall two decades ago.”

“Perhaps Ben Roethlisberger is the only future Hall candidate who could get in having worn just one jersey (since Hall voters did not think Eli Manning was worthy of deep-finalist consideration last year). Teams that figure to be in the quarterback market include the Raiders, Browns, Jets, Dolphins and Cardinals. The Steelers, Colts, Rams and Vikings could also all be in need of a quarterback depending upon how the early offseason plays out.”

Minnesota might have a slight advantage in the hypothetical Burrow trade market, as Cincinnati could be reluctant to trade Burrow within the AFC.

Finishing the Season Strong … and Happy?

With Cincinnati’s games no longer meaning anything because the Bengals are eliminated from postseason contention, Burrow decided to uncork the football and play flawlessly in back-to-back games.

Against the Miami Dolphins and Arizona Cardinals, Burrow has delivered 616 passing yards, 6 touchdown passes, and zero interceptions in consecutive games. The theories about his discontent have fallen by the wayside — that’s what winning does.

Had the Bengals continued to struggle — or basically played good teams, not bottom-feeders — the narrative might be a bit different. That has not happened, though, and Cincinnati will finish a poor 2025 campaign on a high note.

A Stubborn Front Office

Here’s the deal with Burrow trade theories: his front office is notoriously headstrong. The same group led Burrow to sadness earlier this month, and for some reason, always seems to rub players the wrong way. Players have a hard time getting simple extensions, and trade requests are common in the offseason. Then, the Bengals sit on the trade requests, the players eventually cave and play, and everyone ends up generally unhappy. See: Trey Hendrickson.

Burrow could, in theory, request a trade and own all the leverage because he’s an absolute superstar. But the front office could also say “no” and sit on his request indefinitely.

This is a long way of saying that a Burrow trade request, if things trend that poorly for Burrow, could get messy.

The Price for Burrow?

How about the cost to land Burrow? Oh, that’s a beast.

NFL teams can only trade up to three 1st-Round picks, meaning the Vikings, for instance, cannot include their 2029 1st-Rounder in a deal.

To get Burrow, regarding Minnesota or any team, it will probably take three 1st-Rounders, a player, and maybe some mid-round draft sweetener. Meanwhile, the Vikings have an “age problem” with their roster at the moment, as general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah’s drafts have netted so few productive players.

Jones noted on the price, “The floor for any such deal would seemingly be the Deshaun Watson trade from 2022. The Browns sent three first-round picks, two second rounders and one third to the Texans to acquire Watson (and a sixth-round pick).”

“But even that wasn’t enough for one AFC team executive, who told CBS Sports a ‘Ricky Williams type’ of trade would have to transpire. That was when the Saints traded their entire 1999 draft, plus two future first-round picks, to Washington in order to move up seven spots and select the Texas running back.”

It’s worth noting that Minnesota has most of its draft picks intact, unlike last year at this time when much of the 2025 haul had been traded for outside linebacker Dallas Turner.

Jones concluded, “It is unimaginable such a trade would take place in today’s NFL, just as it’s unimaginable in Cincinnati’s building that the Bengals will trade Burrow any time soon. Still, teams make calls on players presumed to be unavailable all the time.”

Trading for Burrow — the absolute farm — would force Adofo-Mensah or a future general manager to hit on a higher rather than average rate on mid- and late-round picks, as the Los Angeles Rams did during their lead-up to the 2021 Super Bowl win over Burrow’s Bengals.
