Need a bit of Vikings info to shake off the sleepy slumber of summer days? No problem, folks.

Minnesota is currently working on welcoming back players to TCO Performance Center. Put differently, the players are getting back to the practice facility. There were forty players who arrived on Sunday — with a notable name jumping off the page — with the rest supposed to arrive today. What do things look like moving forward?

Vikings Info as Training Camp Gets Moving

Very reasonably, there’s going to be a bit of attention on J.J. McCarthy.

Kevin O’Connell was somewhat evasive during the offseason, but there’s no debating the basic truth: Mr. McCarthy is the team’s top passer. He’ll be the one who commands the most attention, but there are various other questions that need answering during training camp.

A brief smattering of some issues: the corner talent (or lack thereof, perhaps), the health of the veteran FA linemen, the battle for TE3, the Josh Metellus extension, the improved running game, and several other topics.

Get a bit more specific.

On the NFL’s website, Kevin Patra runs through some details for Minnesota’s offseason. There’s a helpful recap of the draftees, the free agency results, and the preseason schedule (more on that later). He then runs through some of the top stories, reasonably starting with J.J. McCarthy: “The former first-round pick inherited the Porsche of offenses, which has made almost every driver look good. Kevin O’Connell is a proven QB whisperer, so the assumption is that McCarthy should have little trouble keeping things afloat.”

The second and third points in the Patra piece consider the competition taking place within the secondary and then the upgrades along the offensive line. After all, the NFL is a passing league, so having defensive backs capable of shutting down the skies and then linemen capable of keeping a QB upright are very important.

Fans will get the chance to watch practices starting on Saturday, July 26th. There’s more information about getting out to see the team on Minnesota’s website.

More widespread knowledge will be available during the preseason since everyone can get their eyes on the team. Put differently, couch coaches can render judgment on how things are looking by turning on their TV. Consider what the schedule looks like:

  • Saturday, August 9th versus the Houston Texans
  • Saturday, August 16th versus the New England Patriots
  • Friday, August 22nd at the Tennessee Titans

Best case, of course, is that Minnesota ventures into the games at full health and then leaves at full health. Understandably, there’s a bit of skittishness about these games due to J.J. McCarthy losing his rookie season after last preseason’s opening game. Minnesota will be hoping that nothing similar occurs in 2025.

By Tuesday, August 26th, the Vikings need to shrink their roster down to 53 players. Quite possibly, they could opt to go down to 51 or 52, making room for a player cut from a different team. There’s then the various moves to fill-up the practice squad, a group that consists of 16 players.
